There is a flying J off 5 in Kern county going up the grapevine. It’s going up the mountain. Take it before you get any further south because La area isn’t much fun.

That’s the Flying J in Lebec, exit 205. 4,000 foot elevation, so about 10 degrees cooler. It has a big lot. It’s the last place that you will probably find parking before LA. There’s a Pilot 30 miles to the south, mostly paid parking, and always full. Make sure you trip plan for LA. It could take 80 miles and three hours to transverse it, with no legitimate place to park.
Most of the 5 through Central Valley is flat farmland. About the only bodies of water are the aqua ducts. The Flying J in Lebec has Mountain View’s, but no hiking that I am aware of.
Thanks for the tip, both of you. Unfortunately, due to Sacramento traffic burning up my clock, couldn't quite make it that far. Had to shut down in a real gem of a place.
That is terrible. Sounds like your in Kettleman city area!!!

I'm gonna have to reset soon and I'll be coming down the 5 from northern CA. Does anyone have a tip on a nice spot that's within 3 or 4 hrs of the LA area near the 5, maybe near a lake or some hiking?
