2nd day update

Did lots of paperwork today. Went over benefits, etc. Watched several video's. Will be doing lots of things tomorrow outside most of the day.

I also get to talk to my Acct manager (dispatcher) tomorrow & ask several questions that I have.

Overall, today was a good day.

Ernie

Dispatcher:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

The kind of information that Guy is giving Ernie is PRICELESS.... Thats the stuff that you usually learn as you pass thru the school of hard knocks.....

And that is why we are here. To share our hard earned experiences and hopefully help others avoid the stress and headaches we had to go through cause we did not have anyone to help us out.

DAC:

Drive-A-Check Report

A truck drivers DAC report will contain detailed information about their job history of the last 10 years as a CDL driver (as required by the DOT).

It may also contain your criminal history, drug test results, DOT infractions and accident history. The program is strictly voluntary from a company standpoint, but most of the medium-to-large carriers will participate.

Most trucking companies use DAC reports as part of their hiring and background check process. It is extremely important that drivers verify that the information contained in it is correct, and have it fixed if it's not.

Did more paperwork today, another driving test. Also was on a conference call with my Fleet Manager.

The test drive was to show what I had learned viewing the Smith System video's

Hopefully we will complete orientation on time tomorrow and I will be issued my company truck, or at least be heading to where I will pickup my company truck. Only time will tell.

Was not able to ask my questions because we were on a conference call. Tried later in the afternoon to call, but she had already gone for the day or was not available. So will have to try again tomorrow as time allows to get answers to my questions.

Guy & Starcar, as you have already pointed out, this is one of the many reasons this website is available. To help others without all the stress/pain we had to go through to learn about the different things we have to offer.

I am so thankful I stumbled onto this site back in 2011, and why I still come here and try to help when I can.

Completed my orientation. We completed whatever paperwork that was still left to be done, had classes on how to use PeopleNet (have never used PeopleNet until now). From what I see of the training, very different from the QUALCOMM I have been using up until now. They also showed us how to make backing into very tight places easier (that was very informative).

Was cleared to drive about 1430 this afternoon (2:30pm for you non military time folks).

I will have to spend another night in the motel here in NJ & catch a bus to Wilkes Barre PA tomorrow to go get my truck from a repair facility that it was towed to because the previous driver left it somewhere (not sure where or why). It is a 2015 International ProStar with about 7000 miles on the odometer.

Ernie

Qualcomm:

Omnitracs (a.k.a. Qualcomm) is a satellite-based messaging system with built-in GPS capabilities built by Qualcomm. It has a small computer screen and keyboard and is tied into the truck’s computer. It allows trucking companies to track where the driver is at, monitor the truck, and send and receive messages with the driver – similar to email.

That's kind of a double-edge sword for an experienced driver, ya know? I mean, do you say, "I already knew all that" and sound like a know-it-all or do you say, "Wow, I learned a lot!" and sound like you've been driving clueless all this time???

You are correct on what you said Brett, could have gone either way. The class instructors did ask if anyone had done the Smith System before and from what I could tell, they did not think those of us that had done it previous were Know-it-alls.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

Finally got to my truck this afternoon.

Had to take a bus & taxi ride to get to it. It seems that the guy that was assigned to this truck previous had gotten sick while on the road, so being we are company drivers, can't be having the truck sit too long so I now have a relatively new 2015 International ProStar with 7700 miles on the odometer. Instead of the MaxxForce engine, it has a Cummins ISX400 (very nice).

The guy that had it before me was a smoker, so it reeks of cigarette smoke. I am hoping that JB Hunt will get me past a terminal in the very near future so I can get it cleaned & deodorized.

Ernie

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.
