I don't start school until 8/18 but I applied with Dot Foods in Mt Sterling IL a few days ago and got called for an interview this morning. The interview lasted just over four hours and was very thorough but I think it went well. Now just waiting for the background check to come back and should hear something with in a week. Anyone have any experience with Dot good or bad?

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

I'm familiar with the company but I really don't know anything about em. They've been around quite a while so they at least have that going for em.

The interview lasted four hours??? Geesh!!!!shocked.png

Yeah four hours. There where three different interviewers and another person administering tests and paper work. Then if they decide to offer me a position there will be a driving test, agility test, drug test, an 8 day orientation and 6 to 8 weeks with a trainer.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

Four hours! That sounds like an interrogation, not an interview. LOL Did anyone shine a bright light in your face at any point?

At times it felt like an interrogation. Each interviewer had a list of questions they each went through. Each question was designed to see how I handled different situations. The tests was a four page math test and a four page D.O.T. test.

Wow! Four hours! Now that's thorough! I've looked at DOT Foods a little, and they seem pretty solid. If I remember correctly, I heard they have never had a layoff in the history of the company. I started checking them out after talking to the director of the school I'll be attending soon. It was also nice that they have a terminal out near Syracuse, NY which is only about an hour and a half from where I live now. But, we're looking into moving back that way once I get some time in with whatever company I end up with.

Keep us up to date on your progress. I'd really like to know how it goes for you!

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.

It's been a long process, I graduated school and got my CDL 9/23. I took the final test at Dot today. The CDS ability test. It was quite the workout for this old man but I passed it. I start orientation on the 27th.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Four hours does seem a bit.... I dont know, extreme. I've never heard of them but when I interviewed with Sysco I too had a long interview with two different people plus the road test. It certainly wasn't four hours though! Hope everything works out for you! Good luck

Long interviews aren't a new thing. When I was in manage for a Fortune 500 company and I did the hiring there were two types of interviews.

TThe first type was the "Don't call us, we'll call you" interview. Where you did not get a good feeling about the person.

TThe second one starts like the first and if it goes well then we would have a second manager from the same department come in and continue the interview.

It's a way of weeding out or testing the waters with the interviewee. Different people get different feelings from the same person and more than one person's opinion can be valuable.

Walmart does this but has the interview setup in 3 different interviews.

The first interview consisted of three different interviews with three different people which lasted about 3 hours then the testing was about an hour. I have met with the hiring manager two more times since the first interview sessions then a physical with their doctor and then an ability test.
