A few weeks ago I thought I was going to Swift's Millington TN school. Last week my recruiter told me they had a shorter program in Utah, so I went for it . Started yesterday and I should have my CDL by the end of the week, does that sound crazy or what? Its been a clusterf#@k so far but we'll see how it goes.

Got my permit from Utah yesterday, even though my recruiter said my MO permit would be good, and got out on the yard today backing. I'll keep you updated on how it goes, it from what they say I should have my CDL by Friday!?!!??

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Matt, I went through that program back in May. It is definitely a fast paced program but don't let that intimidate you. Just remember that you do not have to be an expert when you come out of the school. You will learn tons and tons with your mentor. Just stay focused and try to find your own little keys to help you remember anything you think you might have troubles with. Focus on your reference points on the backing range and just do what you find works for you. Take your time and you'll do just fine I'm sure

Thanks Chris.

Looks like it will be pre trip test Monday and the rest Tuesday. So far I seem to be picking up with on everything pretty good, even though I spend more time waiting for a turn than I do behind the wheel. I am having a lot of fun and learning a lot.

It was the same way with me but that tells me that you're doing good. The ones that are struggling will get the most seat time. Are they not gonna have y'all doing both the pre-trip and backing tests on the same day?

They might have use d both on the same day, I'm no sure. I'm just making sure I'm ready for the pretrip on Monday, the backing should be no problem. My plan is to ace the pretrip and backing and save any points for the road test. Just gotta make sure I stay off the curbs and anything else that is an auto fail. I did hit a curb today on the road so I'm going to be extra cautious about that on the test!

The road test was the easiest part to me. It was basically just out to rookie road and back. No city stuff. My next load is taking me out to SLC for a few stops Monday and Tuesday. I'll be in the terminal at some point so maybe I'll be able to stop by and say hey! I've always wanted to meet a fellow truckingtruther haha

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.

Right on, I'll be around. I'm I'm the dorms now, hopefully they won't move me to the hotel Monday.

Passed the road test and completed orentiation last week. Got my mentor and hit the road on Monday, driving a reefer trailer. We drove from Utah to Chicago and now we are back in salt lake city. With a couple of thousand miles under my belt I am getting the hang of it. In 2 or 3 more weeks I will have my own truck!

Reefer:

A refrigerated trailer.

You make it sound like it was easy (which I'm sure it wasn't!). Looks like I'll be heading to SLC for training and I'm more than a little nervous-- any tips for a green student?
