Today, I was supposed to leave 6:45 pm. However, I missed my bus due to traffic jam. Now, my bus will depart 7:20 am. I need to wait the entire time at the Greyhound station.

I started class today at Celadon Quality Drivers school in Laredo, Tx. The first impression is very good. 1. There are only 9 students in my class. 2. Laid back and relaxed atmosphere. 3. The instructors give the students the time. They also let them finish after two weeks. 4. The Celadon Terminal serves Lunch and dinner. I like their Mexican food. 5. The motel is nice. They serve us free breakfast every morning. 6. They serve free lunch and dinner during weekends. 7. Next Saturday, I will have a Grilled Chicken Breast Plate for Lunch and a Tostada a la Siviera for dinner. 8. Sunday I will get Chicken Alfredo for lunch and Grilled Chicken Breast Plate for dinner. I passed the physical, yet they said that I am 11 pounds over the limit regarding overweight. I try to eat less during the week and do more exersize. I found a trail where I can hike along. Everyday after classes, I will go hiking. I don,t use the motel's shuttle service, I choose to walk to Walmart or to the bank. STAY TUNED

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.

Update 9/9/2014: This day was relaxing for me. I attended the class and all practice exams which were graded. That day, we studied for the Class A Permit Tests. We studied and reviewed the Texas Special Requirements and the Combination Vehicle Tests.

Combination Vehicle:

A vehicle with two separate parts - the power unit (tractor) and the trailer. Tractor-trailers are considered combination vehicles.

Update 9/10/14: Students who needed to take the Permit tests went to the DMV. I was among the 4 who already had the permit. We started reviewing the Air Brakes and Pre-Trip preparing for the written tests for the actual CDL.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

DMV:

Department of Motor Vehicles, Bureau of Motor Vehicles

The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.

Update Saturday 9/13/14:

There are no classes on weekends, unless someone wants extra hours of driving training during the weekend.

I decided to relax and do some practice tests.

They are really pampering us. I had my free breakfast, my free lunch, and my free dinner.

We don't need to be scared to starve, but we need to be careful concerning gaining weight.

For lunch, I got Grilled Chicken Breast with vegetables.

For dinner, I got Chicken Tostadas.

They have free shuttle service from 7 am to 7 pm.

BMI and neck size are all the rage now, which leads to sleep apnea testing. confused.gif

Sleep Apnea:

A physical disorder in which you have pauses in your breathing, or take shallow breaths, during sleep. These pauses can last anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes. Normal breathing will usually resume, sometimes with a loud choking sound or snort.

In obstructive sleep apnea, your airways become blocked or collapse during sleep, causing the pauses and shallow breathing.

It is a chronic condition that will require ongoing management. It affects about 18 million people in the U.S.

BMI:

Body mass index (BMI)

BMI is a formula that uses weight and height to estimate body fat. For most people, BMI provides a reasonable estimate of body fat. The BMI's biggest weakness is that it doesn't consider individual factors such as bone or muscle mass. BMI may:

  • Underestimate body fat for older adults or other people with low muscle mass
  • Overestimate body fat for people who are very muscular and physically fit

It's quite common, especially for men, to fall into the "overweight" category if you happen to be stronger than average. If you're pretty strong but in good shape then pay no attention.
