In the last few days I've pined over my previous company and wondered if I should go through HR and fight to stay. But I bit my knuckles all weekend and sat tight, sending out applications as I'd done before, and keeping my mind open. I've at least received a couple of calls from new trucking companies and things are looking better already. One door closed and a few others have flung open. Some companies are actually looking like a better deal (and fit) than the one before. The new companies I'm talking to aren't even asking me what went on with the last one. They don't seem to care. And there are aspects about them that look even more attractive than the one before.

You guys were ri-ight!

Good to hear MG! I am a firm believer things may not always work out the way we want, but they do seem to work out and many times better! I look forward to hear how things go!

That's fantabulous MG! I'm already jealous cause I still have a couple months before I even get to CDL school. :) Keep us posted!

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Thanks, Jolie! You're so right. They do. Getting to the "other side" of the closed door phase, is the toughest.

No worries, SE. Just study that High Road Training Program inside and out, get your permit with tanker and any other endorsements you can get with a permit, start your hazmat background check, take the hazmat test, get as many pre-hire letters as you can possibly get (they're relatively easy to obtain) and you'll be so squared away at school their heads will be spinning! If you're going to a company-sponsored school, even better. Get pre-hire letters in the event you still might need them.

I haven't been in a truck in a week-and-a-half and I sure do miss it already.

HAZMAT:

Hazardous Materials

Explosive, flammable, poisonous or otherwise potentially dangerous cargo. Large amounts of especially hazardous cargo are required to be placarded under HAZMAT regulations

Pre-hire:

What Exactly Is A Pre-Hire Letter?

Pre-hire letters are acceptance letters from trucking companies to students, or even potential students, to verify placement. The trucking companies are saying in writing that the student, or potential student, appears to meet the company's minimum hiring requirements and is welcome to attend their orientation at the company’s expense once he or she graduates from truck driving school and has their CDL in hand.

We have an excellent article that will help you Understand The Pre-Hire Process.

A Pre-Hire Letter Is Not A Guarantee Of Employment

The people that receive a pre-hire letter are people who meet the company's minimum hiring requirements, but it is not an employment contract. It is an invitation to orientation, and the orientation itself is a prerequisite to employment.

During the orientation you will get a physical, drug screen, and background check done. These and other qualifications must be met before someone in orientation is officially hired.
