Your license can be transfered from state to state - but you can not use a school's address as your home address, this would be considered fraud. You normally have to establish residency of 30 days or more to have a home address. check with your school-recruiter, they will explain how your CDL licensing process works through their training.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

I am from the great state of florida. (Just threw up a little) and of course it varys from county to county but in citrus county i have seen numerous out of town workers at the power plant end up in court and even a few arrested due to not changing their license with in 10 days. These are temporary skilled labors that usally work about two months then goto their home town or state again. I watched a judge completely belittle the cop in an arraignment and droped all charges then suggested that he sue the officer and the department if it was the department's policy to make criminals out of workers. Lol. And the real kicker to this is in florida you must have 2 forms of mail usally utility bills in order establish residency. That can be kinda difficult if your living in a motel.

Brian, this is the standard procedure, and it is done this way all the time. The state's realize that it's not your permanent address, but it is your residence while living and attending the school. It is understood that you are going back to your state of residence to get the license transferred into your permanent residence state.

I am from Florida, if I go to road aster truck driving school don't I get my cdl A from them or when I pick a company

If you live in FL, go to Roadmaster in Fl, test out in FL, you will get your CDL from FL DMV. My son graduated from Tampa and got his license at get Pinellas Co. Tax office. Roadmaster provides the training and road tests with certified proctors.

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

DMV:

Department of Motor Vehicles, Bureau of Motor Vehicles

The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.

Interesting, I had to prove my residency with lease, utility bills, insurance card and bank statements, like any 2 of these would do. One had to prove "legal presence" (social security card) even though I had only been licensed in New Mexico for about 30 years or so.confused.gif

The private school will provide the truck and the tester will be a certified guy who does the road tests, yard test and pre-trip inspection and he will file the required paperwork with the dmv. My branch college just provided the instructors and trucks, and we tested with a state certified guy.

Phil

Pre-trip Inspection:

A pre-trip inspection is a thorough inspection of the truck completed before driving for the first time each day.

Federal and state laws require that drivers inspect their vehicles. Federal and state inspectors also may inspect your vehicles. If they judge a vehicle to be unsafe, they will put it “out of service” until it is repaired.

I live in Port Orange and have had a CDL for 20 years. However I didn't drive tractor trailers for 14 years so when I made the decision to go OTR for Prime, I had to take a 80 hour refresher course to get certified. I went to Career Tech in Lakeland FL because they gave me a veterans discount that Roadmaster wouldn't. CT also had a farm house to stay for free while attending the course. My roommate at CT lived in Massachusetts and was going to get his CDL and team drive with his brother for Scheffer/CCC. Apparently when he got his CDL and went back home to Mass, he applied for Scheffer and they denied him employment because they didn't accept CDL from the state of Florida. Maybe it was possible that they denied him because of the trifecta rule in which you're not supposed to hold residence in one state, have a CDL from another and work for a company in yet another.

On a side note, when I moved from California to Illinois in 04, I had to retake the written tests for my CDL and all endorsements when I hit Illinois. When I moved from Illinois to Florida in 13, I didn't have to take any tests, they just transferred my CDL strait over to Florida.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.
