After you pass the school you need to pass all over again at dmv. After dmv you can go to orientation the following monday. If a mentor isnt available on Wednesday they put you into a hotel untill the mentor shows up.

double-quotes-end.png

They must of changed it cuz when I drove for swift the trainer couldn't take home time while with a student and this was may of 2014....

Why do you test at the school and the dmv? We did our test at the terminal with instructers that are certified from the dmv and when you passed they gave us a envlope with our results too take to the dmv and got our cdl... The next test we did was to upgrade to solo and that was at the terminal....

Used to be, years ago - that some of the larger companies had "certified CMV testers" on staff. And some of these companies were passing people that, well, really - didn't deserve to be pass. Big scandal behind that - and the trucking companies that were doing it (CDL Mills) ruined it for everyone else, as the states took the privilege of doing their own "official testing" away from most company schools.

It's a PITA that, while CDL REQUIREMENTS are uniform amongst the states - testing/transfer/etc. is not. Some states will allow an immediate transfer of a CDL obtained elsewhere (in an out-of-state-school for example) to be transferred immediately - some will not (I think MD is one that doesn't). Some states require re-testing - some will not.

Your License/CDL is the primary ID that established your RESIDENCY (for tax and other purposes) - so you really want to keep it in your home state. Would be NICE if there was some kind of uniformity around transferring newly obtained CDL's between the states.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.

CMV:

Commercial Motor Vehicle

A CMV is a vehicle that is used as part of a business, is involved in interstate commerce, and may fit any of these descriptions:

  • Weighs 10,001 pounds or more
  • Has a gross vehicle weight rating or gross combination weight rating of 10,001 pounds or more
  • Is designed or used to transport 16 or more passengers (including the driver) not for compensation
  • Is designed or used to transport 9 or more passengers (including the driver) for compensation
  • Is transporting hazardous materials in a quantity requiring placards

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

DMV:

Department of Motor Vehicles, Bureau of Motor Vehicles

The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.

Did you have your permit when you went to school or did you get there? I already have my Ala permit so how do and where would i take the DMV test?

double-quotes-start.png

.... Once you get on the truck with your trainer you are out for 200 hours then you go back to the terminal ....

double-quotes-end.png

That's 200 hours of you behind the wheel, which works out to 4-5 weeks. The first 50 hours you and your mentor have the same schedule, same as a solo driver. The remaining 150 hours, the two of you work as a team: one drives and the other stays in the sleeper and basically the truck "never stops".

Also, when your mentor gets home time, they go home, and you stay in a local hotel. (Swift buys the room, food is your responsibility.) You might get a chance to stop by your house only if the planets are aligned and you get very lucky.

I went to school in richmond. They took VA PA and NC students only. Like I said we tested out at swift to pass the school. Pa students and nc students were sent home to test at their own dmv test sites. I was from va. We took a swift freightliner about 30 minutes away to a dmv test site to obtain our cdl.

With Swift Training how soon after school do you go out with trainer? Do you get CDL License before you go out with trainer or after you finish with trainer? can't find answer on web

I finished my school training in Fontana, CA, went to DMV to have my CDL-A print out, then got out with my mentor the next week. But my DL hard copy have to wait for 60 days mailing back to your address per staff behind the counter.
