So I failed a drug test 3 weeks ago at CRST, I didn't have the the money to dispute it so i came home(my parents had to buy my ticket home). Anyways, I have been applying to other schools, telling them upfront that i failed my drug test, since i know they will find out anyways. I offer to retake the test since i know that i am clean. I even try to play the veteran card but i keep getting turned down. What are my options?

I still want to be a truck driver, i was a truck driver in the military and i thought it would be something i can transition into easily. I have applied to only a few places, i.e. Swift, Prime inc, Schneider, Roehl. I currently don't have a cdl so i need a company that can train me to get it. I've talked to a few schools around my area and they told me get my DAC report...which from what i have read, i have requested a report from hireright.com. Is there something else i can do to convince these companies that i am serious about trucking and that i am clean?

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

DAC:

Drive-A-Check Report

A truck drivers DAC report will contain detailed information about their job history of the last 10 years as a CDL driver (as required by the DOT).

It may also contain your criminal history, drug test results, DOT infractions and accident history. The program is strictly voluntary from a company standpoint, but most of the medium-to-large carriers will participate.

Most trucking companies use DAC reports as part of their hiring and background check process. It is extremely important that drivers verify that the information contained in it is correct, and have it fixed if it's not.

I've always been assumed a failed test will ruin all of your chances going forward and the only chance left would be going to a private school and hoping a small company will take a chance on you. Thats all a guess though. Hopefully it works out for you. I've bought some home tests so I will know for sure when I'm clean and can start school. I'm still paranoid that I will be dirty though even though I quit and have no desire to smoke since fully committing to being a driver. Its too bad a relatively harmless drug can stay in your system so long. Its understandable why companies are strict like that though. Can't take chances with high dollar cargo and more importantly peoples lives.

I'm kinda in the same pickle, I used to smoke to help me with pain problems, but quit a little while ago and have a offer on the table from CR England to come to school, BUT im afraid to go and get there and instead of a urine they do a hair test. I know i will pee clean, but hair it stays for ALONG time from what i have read. Good luck in your search and wish ya the best!

The long and short of it is with a failed drug test now on your record ,even if you do make it through school, most companies will not touch you for at least a year.

Not sure what they busted you for but if you have ever seen then do the final wrap up after the test they pour the contents of the cup into TWO separate plastic vials. One is used during the test for drugs and the second is used for more test in case of a false positive.

Unless something has changed appeals are done at no charge. Does not matter if you retake another test or not the point is they failed you on THIS first test and that is the one that counts. So unless you can get them to test the other sample they keep and get the positive reversed then pretty much no one will touch you for at least a year.

Weather or not CRST reports it to DAC the office that did the test have to by law have to send it in so that it can be recorded and so the DOT and states have access to the test results and it is also one of the checks that all companies do also along with driving record and background checks.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

Chris, were you going thru the school on a GI grant?? And I have to ask, did you, or could you have drugs in your system ?? Or was the test bad ?? Cuz if the test was bad, you can pay for, and have done, a hair sample test by a reputable lab. They can test the hair as far back as the length of hair, which is quite awhile. Then you would have definitive proof that you haven't done drugs. The tests aren't really that expensive, when you match it with your other alternatives...You may even be able to have a hair sample test done THRU the VA, at their clinic. It is something you will have to go to your clinic and explain your situation. Hopefully, they will do it for you. Good Luck.

EPU:

Electric Auxiliary Power Units

Electric APUs have started gaining acceptance. These electric APUs use battery packs instead of the diesel engine on traditional APUs as a source of power. The APU's battery pack is charged when the truck is in motion. When the truck is idle, the stored energy in the battery pack is then used to power an air conditioner, heater, and other devices

There are many small companies that will accept military experience as valid experience, you can find small local companies on www.Craigslist.org Be careful as some of those small companies will have the trucks leased on to larger companies, you should ask up front if they are leased on to a larger company if they say yes cut the conversation short and find a company that is working with their own authority.
