Maybe it's just NYS but I didn't have to take a drug test for my medical card. They did a dip stick for urine analysis (sugar and such). I had scheduled a drug test with my physical and they said it wasn't required. Saved me $40.

Each state handles the CDL process a little differently. You'll have to take a drug test before beginning your first job for sure. Many schools will require a drug test before you begin training also.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

I know in NM you have to pass a DoT drug test before you can legally drive a truck on public roads, including learners permits.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

Here's some information for interested parties. I took it upon myself to have a hair test done on my own time. I went through a testing company to do this.

Here's how I shot myself in the foot (read carefully):

Drug tests are not considered private health information under HIPAA. My hair test results were positive, as I expected. This drug test result will now show up on every pre-employment background check that I undergo. As far as I know, this information is part of my permanent record. When you're presented with the paper to do a background check, you can either sign the paper or lose the job opportunity. I predict that no one will hire me on this basis. If you want to know your own results, I recommend that you use a store bought kit.

The dismay I feel is real, but at least I'm still sober I guess. Just GOD DAMMIT!

Before I started CDL school I went to a professional clinic after having passed 3 at home tests. All UA. I requested the "mock" DOT test. Same test as DOT except the results are not reported. I was the only one to get the results. I knew that even after the at home tests, the real test could show past activities and would be a matter of DOT record forever. Cost me about 40 extra bucks but was worth it for peace of mind.

If you can get a medical card in your state without a drug test you should just pay the money and spend the time you need to clean studying for the permit. You'll be ahead of the curve and be clean before your company or school test. At least you aren't wasting time if you do this. Just my two cents.

I just think that drug users aren't the bad guys. Gosh I'm just so worked up over this. Sorry to get all political, but the war on drugs was such a huge misstep in this country. I just want to spit on the floor and kick puppies and flip tables all day and all night. I'm ****ed is what I'm saying.

So I could definitely! google this, but im going to ask you guys. What about the simple suspicion of having marijuana on your person (e.g. smelling like it) when being pulled over by trooper or DOT check? Does it follow regular driving rules (e.g. if i get pulled over, and they smell it but i have nothing in the car and wasnt the original reason they pulled me over in the first place); are you good to go?

Here I go again, feel free to ban me since I'm not talking about trucking. Nowhere is safe for the humble drug user. The cops absolutely will harass you for suspicion of these things. Drug users are the scapegoats for violent criminals (who are much harder to catch and convict). The smell is absolutely what gives you away as a pothead. Like I said, nowhere is safe.

I'll stop now.

If a police officer or DOT suspects you of having marijuana or any other drug, whether from smell or anything else I'm guessing they'll search your truck and most likely perform a sobriety test. It won't matter as long as you don't have drugs and aren't under the influence.

I've been pulled over a few times, always for a random inspection but the inside of my truck has never been thoroughly searched. If they wanted to, they'd be welcome. Nothing to hide here, just the clutter of two people living in a truck. I think I'd be more embarrassed than anything depending on how recently we'd cleaned up the truck.

Move to Colorado. Although I bet even those that transport pot can't qualify to do so if they've been smoking.

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.
