So I start school on the 21st and I have my first telephone interview with Molly at Schneider on the 20th. I spoke with them today and they are hoping to get me signed up and with a guaranteed offer (was looking for prehire but the guy today kept saying guaranteed position) soon as I have my CDL-A in my hands. They were also happy with my choice of school and it's 160 hour program.

Does anyone care to give me an honest opinion about Schneider? What's their training pay like, how long with a trainer, what's their home time realistically like? Do they use e-logs and most importantly, can I make decent $ with them in the long term?

Obviously I will be talking to more companies, but it seemed like a good place to start, since my school highly recomends them.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Prehire:

What Exactly Is A Pre-Hire Letter?

Pre-hire letters are acceptance letters from trucking companies to students, or even potential students, to verify placement. The trucking companies are saying in writing that the student, or potential student, appears to meet the company's minimum hiring requirements and is welcome to attend their orientation at the company’s expense once he or she graduates from truck driving school and has their CDL in hand.

We have an excellent article that will help you Understand The Pre-Hire Process.

A Pre-Hire Letter Is Not A Guarantee Of Employment

The people that receive a pre-hire letter are people who meet the company's minimum hiring requirements, but it is not an employment contract. It is an invitation to orientation, and the orientation itself is a prerequisite to employment.

During the orientation you will get a physical, drug screen, and background check done. These and other qualifications must be met before someone in orientation is officially hired.

Sue, I've never worked for Schneider, but I can tell you they have a long history in the industry with a great all around reputation for being a good solid company. I don't know anything about their training pay, but we've had several people in here go through their training and say that it was excellent. Yes, they will use E-logs. You can definitely make some decent money with them in the long run.

No matter what you happen to read online about a company like Schneider, you will also discover, when you show up at their terminal , a long wall of photos of "million mile" drivers who are still with the company. Nobody keeps those million milers around like Schneider.

You go in there with a great work ethic, and a "go get em" attitude and you will do very well with them. One of the advantages of working for such a large trucking company like them is that they have so many different divisions that you can move around to and from until you find a niche that fits you well.

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

EPU:

Electric Auxiliary Power Units

Electric APUs have started gaining acceptance. These electric APUs use battery packs instead of the diesel engine on traditional APUs as a source of power. The APU's battery pack is charged when the truck is in motion. When the truck is idle, the stored energy in the battery pack is then used to power an air conditioner, heater, and other devices

What I'm seeing with them right now, are multiple dedicated accounts in my area accepting both experienced and new drivers, with a $5k sign on for newbies and $7k for experienced drivers with daily/weekly hometime or regional teams and solos with biweekly home.

Regional:

Regional Route

Usually refers to a driver hauling freight within one particular region of the country. You might be in the "Southeast Regional Division" or "Midwest Regional". Regional route drivers often get home on the weekends which is one of the main appeals for this type of route.

I have a phone interview with them tomorrow. I have done so much searching and always seem to come back to Schneider. So I finally applied. I have seen and heard way more good than bad about Schneider. I unfortunately have to wait until October because I am taking the weekend class and that is only one day a week. I wish you the best of luck though with any job you take.

Mine is next Thursday. Little disappointed today. I got my official letter stating my current employer will be paying for my class that they are hosting where I work. I signed the acceptance form to give back to hr. When they handed me my copy back.. I noticed they've changed our start date by 2 weeks. So I won't start school til September 7 and will finish in early November.

Trying to keep in mind there's a reason for everything. .. probably that our scholarship program didn't get the money to the school in time to get our dot medical cards and drug screens completed before our class starts. No sense in them paying $4k in advance for cdl classes if someone doesn't qualify and the school requires those things and the $ before you attend the first class.

I'm not going to complain, even though I want to lol. Heck, getting school paid for in advance with absolutely no obligation to my current employer. . That also covers all our testing, dot physical, drug screen, and the class. 2 more weeks. 😊

SAP:

Substance Abuse Professional

The Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) is a person who evaluates employees who have violated a DOT drug and alcohol program regulation and makes recommendations concerning education, treatment, follow-up testing, and aftercare.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

You are still going to attend the school so the two weeks is not to bad I think. And that is nice to have it covered. I had to pay the 4k, the DOT physical, drug screen, and test. Also the program I had to do is 14 weeks long. I started in June and wont complete until October. But I am happy that there was that option. That is the main reason I went to the school I am. They were the only ones around that offered the weekend class. If they did not have that I would not have been able to take any schooling. I wish you the best of luck though. It is allot of fun driving these trucks. I cant wait to get out on the road by myself with them.
