Roehl, Prime, Schneider,Werner-----Where to go???
I can speak to Roehl as that is where I went to school and began driving. Their training is excellent and does not last nearly as long as most other companies. You can bring a spouse or child after 6 months of safe driving (I think that is the time frame). Right before I left. they instituted a pet policy which seemed quite expensive to me, but I dont have a pet either. Depending on where you live they do have dedicated regional accounts. Decent home time and they were just getting some automatics about the time I left. Hope this helps and good luck!

Discuss your problems about wrong driver's directions and how to avoid them.
This seems more like an advertisement to me than someone actually looking for information.

It really depends on who you work for and the type of accounts they have. I drive on a dedicated account for Marten Transport and there are certain locations we cannot take an empty trailer out of because the shipper needs them so they can preload trailers. It is a new account and eventually we may be able to but for the time being, if you don't bring in a loaded trailer you don't take an empty one out.

Hard time with straight backing, Any tips would be appreciated.
Brian, while I have no tips for you I can offer encouragement! I was strongly advised to quit trucking school not once, but twice because the instructors did not think I could pass the backing portion of the test. I wouldn't quit and by golly got my license on the first time testing. See I am not much if a visual learner and have to think things through for them to make sense to me. We all learn differently so use your learning style to figure it out.....I am sure you can because if I can do this anyone can!

Jan, I am 54 and got my CDL in October last year just a few days after my birthday. It wasn't easy as I am not a visual learner so the backing portion was difficult to say the least. However, if you set your mind to it you can do anything is my motto! I say go for it!

Passed my CDL Permit test....now off to Roehl
Shawn, I went to Appleton for extra training after I got my CDL through their school in Marshfield. I don't think the same instructors teach RDTC as do the Phase 1 class but everyone is very professional and you will learn a lot in a short period of time. Not sure of how they do meals for the school part as I know things have changed since I went last October (we were on our own for meals), but if they provide meals take some extra cash or pb&j. We had pretty much the same thing every day and in a week it was old. Don't get me wrong I am a member of the "if it's free it's for me" club, but I still can't bear the thought of eating at Denny's!!!
Best of luck to you!!!
