Hypothetical Tax Question: If my state of record is AZ, but I work for Prime, would I have to file dual - state income taxes? My wife asked the question and I don't know the answer. If I drive for Prime, but live in AZ, would Prime withhold AZ state taxes??

I honestly don't know, this topic isn't where my knowledge rests. But here's what I can tell you.

Women are always right, always. So whatever your wife thinks is the right answer is statistically shown to be the correct answer. So just reverse the roles and ask her this question. Her response will be correct because women are always right.

I believe it's based on your home of record location, so if you hang your shirt in AZ (aka home time) then that's the state your taxes are based on.

When I was in AmeriCorps my base of ops was in MD my first year and MS 2nd year but both times any taxes were based on where I actually lived when not in AmeriCorps which is Texas.

Since I worked for Prime, I believe I can answer your question. As it has been stated already, your taxes are based on your home of record (in your case AZ). My home of record is VA, my taxes were withheld for VA, not VA & MO.

This is decided by the state you reside in. If AZ has a reciprocal agreement with the state you work in, you will only pay in AZ. If AZ doesn't have this agreement, you will probably ending up paying in both states if both states collect state taxes.

But if you are OTR and don't physically work in just one location, your taxes should revert back to the state you reside in. See list of states with reciprocity agreements: http://taxes.about.com/od/statetaxes/a/reciprocal-agreements.htm

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.
