I recently read this article about the earnings of a truck driver in Canada, http://www.truckloancenter.com/blog/truck-truck-driver-news/much-truckers-earn-annually/. Is these figures correct. And what about in US? Are the earnings of a truck driver similar there?

If you run hard, plan on grossing $1k per week. $52K per year. YMMV

On average, over the road drivers make about $32,000-$36,000 their first year. Usually around $40,000 their second year. And it tops out around $50,000-$55,000 around years 3 to 5. There are jobs with considerably higher earning potential like in specialized hauling or line haul jobs. But those are average over the road figures.

We have an excellent wiki article on truck driver pay which shows the various ways drivers can get paid and median salaries per state.

We have a forum conversation where one of our Moderators, Daniel, gave us Truck Driving Salary: My First Year Breakdown and breaks it all down.

We also have an article from a few years ago where TruckerMike talks about My 2010 Salary - Finishing Up My Second Year Behind The Wheel and breaks it all down.

Over The Road:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

Line Haul:

Linehaul drivers will normally run loads from terminal to terminal for LTL (Less than Truckload) companies.

LTL (Less Than Truckload) carriers will have Linehaul drivers and P&D drivers. The P&D drivers will deliver loads locally from the terminal and pick up loads returning them to the terminal. Linehaul drivers will then run truckloads from terminal to terminal.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.
