Just got my CDL...but my license will need to be renewed in a year
Really?? That's weird. Illinois upgraded your license to a CDL but didn't push out the renewal time a few years? Huh. Seems like they should have.
I personally would get the endorsement now and then deal with it again when it's time to renew. That's life in the trucking industry. You're constantly taking drug tests, getting DOT inspections, DOT physicals, driving tests, and all kinds of stuff it seems. That's just how it goes.
A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.
State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

Yeah, I was told that because my original license is due for renewal next year, that my CDL doesn't reset the renewal date. Anyway, it is what it is. Thanks, Brett, I have scheduled my appointment for Friday for fingerprints, then just study and wait for the approval letter, for HAZMAT. Your traing materials are awesome. Thanks again!

Did you look at the expire date on your license? That settles all bets. "I was told..." is just hearsay.

Just got my CDL and want to get my Hazmat endorsement and TWIC card, but my license will need to be renewed in a year and this is what I found on State of Illinois website
"Commercial Driver's License (CDL) applicants and CDL holders who wish to obtain or maintain a Hazardous Materials (H) or Combined Tank/Hazardous Materials (X) Endorsement must have a TSA security threat assessment on file prior to taking the written test for the endorsement. The hazardous material endorsement test and the security threat assessment are both required at every renewal for all CDL holders with the H or X endorsement who wish to maintain the endorsement. When renewing a CDL with a H or X endorsement, the driver must begin the process 60 days prior to the expiration date on the CDL."
Should I wait ?

TWIC:
Transportation Worker Identification Credential
Truck drivers who regularly pick up from or deliver to the shipping ports will often be required to carry a TWIC card.
Your TWIC is a tamper-resistant biometric card which acts as both your identification in secure areas, as well as an indicator of you having passed the necessary security clearance. TWIC cards are valid for five years. The issuance of TWIC cards is overseen by the Transportation Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security.
