Does anyone know where I can get, or if its even possible for me to get a full background check on myself? Something that would allow me to see exactly what a company would see if they did a check on me. I know there are websites that do checks (instant checkmate is one I looked at) but most of them are not consumer reporting agencies that can be used for hiring purposes. I called one (official) consumer reporting company and they told me I could not do a background check on myself, and they only do background checks for companies doing checks on employees (with the employees written consent)

Doesn't seem right that you can't get an official background check on yourself

Anyone else looked into this? I would like to get an official one but if I can't are those web sites any good, such as Instant CheckMate?

Try hireright.com or goodhire.com call both of them and ask what is in their detailed report. This way you don't spend your money for nothing. Hopefully you get exactly what you need. Good luck.

That article is from 2012. And when it comes to the trucking industry, HireRight is the one running the DAC system which all of the major companies use.

DAC:

Drive-A-Check Report

A truck drivers DAC report will contain detailed information about their job history of the last 10 years as a CDL driver (as required by the DOT).

It may also contain your criminal history, drug test results, DOT infractions and accident history. The program is strictly voluntary from a company standpoint, but most of the medium-to-large carriers will participate.

Most trucking companies use DAC reports as part of their hiring and background check process. It is extremely important that drivers verify that the information contained in it is correct, and have it fixed if it's not.

I agree. Hireright is the place to go. For a driving record check with your DMV. You can usually get a copy for a small fee. If you will be going to Canada, it is a good idea to pull your FBI wrap sheet. That is what is checked by the border people. You can get one from FBI.gov. It is $18 and takes a couple months to come in.

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

DMV:

Department of Motor Vehicles, Bureau of Motor Vehicles

The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.

Thanks. I was just about to go with the other one that was suggested GoodHire.com. I read some good stuff about them, and the pricing seemed right. But I go back and look at hireright again

With HireRight you have to be a business to get background checks. I tried through them and was denied as I am not a "brick and mortar" business. Was able to get my criminal reports pulled in both Virginia and Kentucky by calling the proper agency, filling out their forms (printable in PDF) and mailing in the fee. I had my DMV reports checked over the phone by giving them my info. I knew there was nothing on there but wanted to double check. Think I will follow the link Rolling Thunder posted with the FBI.gov. Good luck Mike W.

"Moving Forward", if you haven't been a truck driver yet then there may not be anything on your DAC report through HireRight, but then again there may be. It just depends on whether or not you've worked for companies in the past that have used HireRight for reporting or not. We have a page in our wiki about The DAC Report and it has a link near the bottom for getting a free copy of your DAC report.

The FTC (Federal Trade Commission) has information regarding background checks and what a prospective employer may, or may not, do with that information. If they decided not to hire you because of something in a background check, they have to give you a copy or the report and who the reporting agency is so you have an opportunity to confirm or dispute the information if it's incorrect.
