I found some cheap radio controlled full function (working steering forwards and reverse) semi truck toys on Amazon like this one: $30 RC Semi Truck on Amazon

Of course I have no idea how good they are, but I'm thinking about getting one myself. If I do I'll post a review of it here for everyone. :)

The point of getting a toy truck with steering wheels was to help me understand what happens when you turn the steering wheel left or right, which way the trailer will go. THe R/C ones do just that, but you're right....I don't think I want to start trying to assemble that just to get it cheaper...lol

What my friend told me before I decided to get my CDL and start driving was that when you're connected to trailer you need to turn your wheel in the opposite direction of where you want the back of your trailer to go. If you want your trailer to go right, you turn left. If you want it go left, you turn right.

I totally understand the whole toy/rc truck thing though. When I did finally get my CDL, I got a toy truck from a truck stop while I was out with my trainer, and we grabbed some boxes and used the toy truck to get a "bird's eye view" of what happens. The steers don't turn, but it can still be helpful if you keep in mind that you turn your steers in the opposite direction of where you want your trailer to go.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

I also had this idea... When I was 12 my Dad drove for North American. For Christmas he got me a remote control semi & trailer. It was an orange Allied Van Lines RC. I LOVED that thing. It was so cool. It has a steering wheel, a trigger & a button for controls. The steering wheel steered the front wheels, the trigger was the gas (High & low), and the button actuated a dial on the top of the cab. The dial had pie shaped sections that were colored red, yellow, green & white. Green was FWD, red was REV, yellow was a 5th wheel drop & white was NEU. You could drop your trailer, back & hook, & drive. Sooo much fun! And, my Dad was there to show me how drive it.

In true teenager fashion when it broke I tried to fix it, which made it worse. Not sure what happened to it. I'd sure love to have it now... I learned a lot about backing with that thing.

When your practicing backing for real, the secret,is knowing when to straighten, your steer tires, thus pivoting the trailer. There is actually a few truck driving sims you can use to practice backing in a virtual world. Helped me out greatly.
