I am ready to take my tests for my permits and just found out I need my medical card to obtain the permits. I am going to take the tests in Wisconsin. If I get a physical done by my doctor will Prime accept this? I want to go to prime with everything I need to make my job easier. Sent my application to them and left 2 voicemails with a recruiter and still no call back. there is nothing in my background that would prevent me from obtaining my cdl. Should I wait to hear from a recruiter or keep doing everything on my end to keep moving forward

  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.

Hi Larry, you're a good guy.

You could get your physical done, it won't hurt but it won't do you any good either. Prime will still require you to get a physical done through their doctors so you'll be essentially throwing away your money.

Now if you have any doubts that you won't pass the physical then get it done before departurimg to MO just to be on the safe side. That's up to you.

Also, Prime's recruiting department is extremely busy and difficult to get a hold of. Keep calling them, that'll show them that you're very interested. Do not remain silent because that phone call might never come.

Heres a tip, call them at 0701 central time. That's when they just get into office. The goal is to call them just as they sit down to start their day. It shouldn't be this hard, but it is with Prime.

Wow I found this thread as I was talking to my Prime recruiter over the phone. I was wondering myself about the medical card. Daniel, is it a good idea then to just study for you permit and take it at Prime?

If you're tight on money and know for a fact that you'll pass the physical then I would just study hard in the comfort of your own home and wait until you get to Prime to do their physical.

The only thing that concerns me about the physical is that I have had two knee surgeries ( I have completely recovered) and I have Sleep Apnea. I know Sleep Apnea plays a big part in DOT testing but is it frowned upon if you have it already?

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

Sleep Apnea:

A physical disorder in which you have pauses in your breathing, or take shallow breaths, during sleep. These pauses can last anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes. Normal breathing will usually resume, sometimes with a loud choking sound or snort.

In obstructive sleep apnea, your airways become blocked or collapse during sleep, causing the pauses and shallow breathing.

It is a chronic condition that will require ongoing management. It affects about 18 million people in the U.S.

Sleep apnea won't disqualify you at all. But it will cost you a pretty penny because you'll have to buy the CPAP machine that Prime will force you to purchase. Having the CPAP machine is the only way you'll be able to drive a semi if you have sleep apnea.

what if I already have a cpap? And when would I have to pay for it if I got it through them?

It'll be deducted in small amounts from your paychecks. As for your other question, that's the extent of my knowledge on this topic. Sorry man!

Larry wants to know:

If I get a physical done by my doctor will Prime accept this?

Daniel answerers:

1.gifDaniel, remember the doctor who does the DOT physical must be DOT certified.

Your permit requires a DOT physical, and if you get that done (along with your permit) you'll be ahead of the game when you get to Prime's school. If the Prime wants their own doctor to poke you, they can do that.

Yeah I know that Sir Errol. Prime's doctors are DOT certified.

Basically, if you spend the money out of your own pocket to get a DOT physical then get your permit, you'll show up to MO with those two things in hand. But they'll still make you take their DOT physical. Essentially, your physical means nothing to them. But it's great that you would already have your permit. However, if you're tight on money I think it's wise to not spend it on a useless physical.
