You will have 12 hours left of your 14. Or 13.75 hours if you went on duty and did a pre-trip first.

The 8 hour "split sleeper" only STOPS the 14 hour clock - it does not RESET IT.

A full 10 hours off/sleeper - resets BOTH the 14 and 10.

It takes about a week before you need to worry about the 70 hours thing.

The 14 hour daily limit is only reset by a ten hour break. Even if you stay in your sleeper for only eight hours, you don't get any extra time, only what's left of your duty/drive time when you stopped. (If you drove 7 hours, you have 4 hours left. If you "sleep" for 8 hours, you still have those 4 hours waiting for you, until you get the other two hours off. 8 ÷ 2 = 10)

You get 14 hours a day to do your daily 11 hours driving plus anything else for work. And, out of any 8 days in a row, you can only work + drive a maximum 70 hours before you have to stop for a while.

Don't worry, it gets easier when you have to "live" it every day. Really.

We also cover Learning The Logbook Rules in our High Road Training Program and we cover the split sleeper berth rule right there on page 95 of the program so check it out.

Logbook:

A written or electronic record of a driver's duty status which must be maintained at all times. The enforcement of the Hours Of Service Rules (HOS) are based upon the entries put in a driver's logbook.
