I've been seeing trucks without radio for the past two weeks of training, and it has me wondering about a few things...

1. Are new drivers coming out of their pocket for CB radios, or does Swift equip them in all of their trucks?

2. If the driver is required to buy the radio, should you buy CB or HAM?

3. Should/can a Swift company driver have satellite radio in their trucks?

Thank you all for your time. Stay Safe.

A Ham radio needs a federal radio license to operate it legally, and is not used by truckers to communicate very often, if at all.

1. I don't believe trucking companies provide cb radios.

2. You can buy a basic CB for around $50.00 same for the antenna. You don't need a HAM radio

3. I think it is up to you if you want a Satellite radio. I don't believe any company has a problem with you using one in your truck.

Ok. Thanks. I wasn't actually sure how popular those radios were within the industry.

Alright. Sweet.

How do I get the CB and antenna installed? Will the company do it for you, or is it something you can do yourself? I've never hooked one up.

Mine has a "cigarette lighter" plug on it. I will mount it with Velcro. Easy in easy out. The antenna will need to be tuned to the radio with a SWR meter. If you are not familiar with CB radios, have a CB shop do it for you.

Amazon has good prices on radios and antennas. Probably cheaper than truck stops or CB shops. Shop around.

All swift trucks have antennas on the truck, all you need is a radio... Installing the radio is easy as buying one, you got 2 wires on the back, one red (+ positive) and one black (- Negitive).. All you do is match the colors in the truck to the CB, most of the newer trucks have them labeled as +/- then you attach the Antenna cable and your done.. I'd advice having a shop tune it though as if your SWR is higher then 2.5-3 you'll fry the board in the CB.....

Thanks for that info David. I have my radio, was holding off on the antenna. I start at the Phoenix Academy on April 25th

The Swift AM/FM raidios are XM compatible. You must buy the subscription, though.

Fm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.
