Is it a good idea to get your TWIC? Here it costs $129.00 and gets you security clearance to enter ports. Not sure how often this will be needed.

I figured the more credentials and endorsements you have, the better your "resume" will be, and the more flexable you will be for your comapny.

Even though they are putting me in the refrigeration fleet, I plan to get my Hazmat and doubbles/tripples just for good measure. Since I'm in NW Ohio I'm also getting my passport so I can haul into Canada.

HAZMAT:

Hazardous Materials

Explosive, flammable, poisonous or otherwise potentially dangerous cargo. Large amounts of especially hazardous cargo are required to be placarded under HAZMAT regulations

TWIC:

Transportation Worker Identification Credential

Truck drivers who regularly pick up from or deliver to the shipping ports will often be required to carry a TWIC card.

Your TWIC is a tamper-resistant biometric card which acts as both your identification in secure areas, as well as an indicator of you having passed the necessary security clearance. TWIC cards are valid for five years. The issuance of TWIC cards is overseen by the Transportation Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security.

Your TWIC card is used for ports, but also used at international boarders, military installations, airports, and other security installations...So yes, tho its a little spendy, its a great thing to have on your "resume"....

My Roehl recruiter told me to get one. She even sent me an email with all of the info on getting it. She basically told me that I will make more money if I have hazmat , passport and twic so I'm getting all of them.

I'm going to school here at Trainco around the end of October. I was going to go to their school in WI but they said I could go to Trainco, which is about a 15 min drive from my house.

Kip, I think you should get as much as you can right off the bat. It's too hard when your burning up the highway to take the time to go get endorsements and the like taken care of.

My TWIC card has helped me get to places a lot of truck drivers never get to go to. I'll tell you what is really cool about it to me. Ports are near beaches. Three different times over the past four months I've taken a 34 hour reset on three different beaches because my TWIC card allowed me to get those loads that went there. I'll rent a car and take a mini vacation enjoying the scenery, the atmosphere, and the great fresh seafood that one finds in those kind of places.

I work hard, but I also know how to relax and enjoy myself when opportunity knocks. That TWIC card allows opportunity to knock a little more often in my opinion.

That was my thinking about it too. Not being a driver YET, it seems to me your MVR , endorsements, and credentials are your "resume" and having all you can get makes your resume look better, makes you more flexable for your company, and gives you more opertunities.

MVR:

Motor Vehicle Record

An MVR is a report of your driving history, as reported from your state Department of Motor Vehicles. Information on this report may include Drivers License information, point history, violations, convictions, and license status on your driving record.
