Local full time after the 8 week training? I mean, something like this would perfect once I get my CDL. Any opinions?

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Not always the case but many local and dedicated jobs require very close quarter maneuvering and backing. And lots and lots of backing.

My opinion is if at all possible get one year off experience before attempting a local job.

By the way I personally know several NFI drivers, good company.

8-week paid transition program for recent driving school graduates

Caught this on the web site. Two things: transition program is not training. It's like a dry van driver learning about flat bed.

Also, understand recent driving school graduates means you have just finished a CDL-A course at a driving school - and you have your full CDL license, not a permit.

Dry Van:

A trailer or truck that that requires no special attention, such as refrigeration, that hauls regular palletted, boxed, or floor-loaded freight. The most common type of trailer in trucking.

Thanks Errol. I plan on going to a school later in the year (wish I could start school tomorrow but I have to wait). You made a good point about the "transition" but wouldn't it be considered training if the person isn't transitioning from another type of driving?

Your heart wants this job, and won't listen to your brain. Almost no trucking school gives you any road experience. The school's job is to get you your CDL , and nothing more.

NFI will take on new cardholders, but newbies will get to ride along* for two months before they are cut loose with their own truck. No company, large or small, would let a brand new driver out on the road with a $200,000 destruction machine. A semi can cause lots of damage, even in a parking lot.

*Not to worry, road training means you will be running the truck and doing pickups & deliveries within a few weeks of getting started. Just no on your own.

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.
