Smithfield, Tar Heel, NC. Every time I come here I sit on my butt waiting at least 12 hours for a load when I could be driving. I really don't like how their scheduling and DLD's line up. It's getting to the point where I'm going to stop showing up until 1 hour before DLD, so I can at least park in a truck stop and avoid parking in the filthystank lot here.

In any case, I just got a severe thunderstorm warning. Considering that this is a primary processing facility for pork, and what the truck parking smells like, it's conceivable that I really might be in for a real-life ****storm.

Sorry man. That really sucks. What company do you work for? Do they pay you layover pay or something for all that sitting?

Feel sorry for you. Any pig farms near by to help add to the aroma?

It could be worse, you could be at a rendering plant, I was working at one before they started production doing electrical work, they started the machines up for a test run, that was my last day there.

I get paid if I stay beyond the load DLD time, which is always at least 10-12 hours after my appointment time. In this case DLD was 0600 this morning. Surprisingly, they had my load ready and I was rolling by about 1030PM last night, with 3.5 hours left to roll, so I only sat there for 6 hours or so after my appointment time, waiting for a drop and hook trailer.

I could have stayed and finished a 10-hour rest, but I had just been tossing and turning in the bunk anyway. I had woken up at 0600, then trying to get back to bed in the early afternoon for a second 10 just wasn't working. I rolled about 200 miles down to Columbia, SC where I have family and by then I was able to sleep. Mom is stopping by for lunch, so something good came out of this.

Drop And Hook:

Drop and hook means the driver will drop one trailer and hook to another one.

In order to speed up the pickup and delivery process a driver may be instructed to drop their empty trailer and hook to one that is already loaded, or drop their loaded trailer and hook to one that is already empty. That way the driver will not have to wait for a trailer to be loaded or unloaded.

Cargill and smithfield do not start slaughtering the animals until you get there.... in most cases. Cargill in NE actually said to me... "there's your product arriving in the truck now. It should be about six hours to get it ready for you" :(

Get there an hour before and you will still be waiting. I had 2 drop n hooks there that were from other drivers who missed their appt
