So I got accepted to Roehl for their trucking school. Then my son who was born 3 months premature got sick and passed away. So I called my recruiter the Friday o was supposed to leave for school and told him about my situation. He told me his thoughts are with me and just let him know. He told me I was still okay and my file was complete. I was supposed to leave the following Monday but my son ended up passing away. Now that it is all said and done I called him and told him the funeral is July 30th I'm already to go. I did everything they wanted but now I'm told it's no longer guarantee that they will call me. Sorry but me holding my 7 week old son as he passed away was more important than going to school. Now they are doing this to me and what happened was out of my hands. So I may have lost a job with the company I really wanted to drive for as well as my only son. Seems like they are trying to play me for a fool and lead me on.

Krungen, sorry to hear about your son. I never had any children myself, so I can only imagine that that must be one of the hardest things for someone to go through. I don't think there's anyone at Roehl or anywhere who would think that you didn't have your priorities straight. But situations change, maybe they don't need as many drivers as they did last month, or maybe they filled all the slots for the coming month. I would say that you should start considering alternatives. If you're still set on Roehl then there's still a possibility they will call, but if they don't you'll be set to move on and start a successful trucking career with another company.

Krungen, your story is heartbreaking! I am very sorry you've had to go through the loss of your son - there are no words I can come up with to comfort you other than to say I'm sorry, that is a wound that even time has trouble healing.

As for Roehl, and any trucking company, things change for them all the time. Their hiring areas change, their demand for drivers some times gets reduced in certain parts of the country.

You did the right thing. Hang in there and stay in contact with them. Your grief is clouding your ability to be crystal clear in your reasoning right now. That's not an indictment, I completely understand those feelings.

Both my fiancé and I want me to do this but due to our son we now have 120,000$ in medical bills and we both were forced to quit our jobs to be at the hospital24/7. I need to go to school still I do have my CDL A and about 10kdrive miles under my belt. My buddy owns his own tractor. But am unsure of other companies and recommendations would be appreciated on what companies are decent.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

I completely understand needs change and how businesses are run. But to tell me that just to call them after everything is done and I'm ready then to give me what feels like a run around is where my unsure feelings are coming from and on top of that we moved my school start date up 3 weeks. It's just how I'm being spoken to at this moment that has me uneasy. If they are full all they need to do is be honest not give a run around.

You're right, it sounds like they didn't really do what they promised, and they should be honest with you about the reasons. I can understand how that might make you think twice about working for that company. But it could also be that something changed that the recruiter didn't know about or couldn't help, so you probably shouldn't judge the entire company on that.

TWIC:

Transportation Worker Identification Credential

Truck drivers who regularly pick up from or deliver to the shipping ports will often be required to carry a TWIC card.

Your TWIC is a tamper-resistant biometric card which acts as both your identification in secure areas, as well as an indicator of you having passed the necessary security clearance. TWIC cards are valid for five years. The issuance of TWIC cards is overseen by the Transportation Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security.

I got everything they got in the mail I requested copies. My criminal record is clear as is my driving record not even a speeding ticket. I would just like honesty as I have been fully honest about my situation and very prompt in doing what they have asked and getting them the info they needed as in the same day prompt.

Yeah, I know what you mean. You made sure to be thorough and on time on everything, and was honest with them, and they didn't show you the same respect. I think we've all had something like that happen in some way or another during our careers, and it sucks. Anyway, maybe if you talk to them again you can find out if it's just because they have slots filled, or if there's some other reason.

Called them this morning and they gave me the same response as the last few times. I'll just need to start looking at other companies that offer financial assistance for there schooling. Yes I could go get my actual liscence next week with my buddies rig but I won't have the schooling companies want to start a real carrier with them.
