I have three months until my contract ends. And I don't want to stay with Central after that. I don't want to do local driving just yet but I'm still interested in OTR.

So after January 4th I will be heading to.....

Prime Inc.

Nothing is wrong with Central they are a great company. But I am very interested in the lightweight fleet that Prime has. My starting pay will be .43cpm and according to the recruiter I will spend no time with a trainer. Straight to Springfield for a few tests then I'll get my own truck immediately.

Also, company drivers are allowed to be trainers at Prime. Which I am eventually planning on being a trainer. An opportunity Central does not provide. Here at Central you don't qualify to be a trainer unless you lease a truck (which is incredibly stupid).

I will be doing the same thing. Might as well make .12cpm more doing it...

I've already applied and been approved. Tami, my recruiter, says to give me a call a few days before the contract expires and then I'll start immediately.

What's your thoughts on this TT?

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

CPM:

Cents Per Mile

Drivers are often paid by the mile and it's given in cents per mile, or cpm.

The problem with that is the light weight trucks don't have a passenger seat.

They do have one. But you can have it removed for the extra place. I will definitely have it removed since I won't be ever having a passenger onboard. I think it's actually a blessing to not have a passenger seat.

I think that is absolutely FANTASTIC!!!

I don't see anything wrong with the idea of moving to Prime. They have great pay, benefits, and equipment. And from the people I've known that have worked there they'll pour the miles on you all year round. And like you said, then you'll have the opportunity to become a trainer if you like.

So it sounds like a perfectly fine plan to me. You're not going to be too thrilled with the lightweight trucks themselves but you certainly will with the paychecks. That's one of the old saying in trucking - would you rather have a beautiful truck or a beautiful paycheck? Sometimes that's a very real choice you have to make.

Daniel look into Prime's food grade tanker if you can. I know when I was starting out they quoted me 0.42 cpm for recent grads. Would be interesting what they pay with 1 year experience.

Good Luck Daniel! Sounds like you've got a plan, and you're gonna be making some good money. I agree with Brett, they've got the ability to lay some miles on you, and I know you'll do what it takes to keep em satisfied. Looking forward to hearing how things go over there for you.

Where would you be sleeping if you pulled a LW truck? I imagine they don't have sleepers...
