We are currently living in North Carolina Charlotte but my family will relocate to Miami Florida. I just signed up for PRIME and wanted to know will it be hard for me to get loads living down south. I plan on going lease operator. I've heard freight is terrible down in florida any advice??

Are you staying with Prime and doing lease?

Have you TOLD PRIME you are going to be relo-ing to Miami? Like as in, you applied from NC, but are moving to SoFla?

Freight is HORRIBLE out of the MIA area. Many O/O's I know, will take a high paying load INTO the area, and then just run EMPTY back up to the I-4/Central Fla neck of the woods to start looking for loads. The few loads there are out of the area, pay for crap - because the shipper know that trucks are just looking to get out of dodge. Most of SoFla's "production" is for EXPORT. The stuff coming into POM and Port Everglades, goes out by rail or container.

As a LEASE OP coming off home time - the FUEL $$ is going to be ON YOU.

Now - going on the fact that we DO NOT RECOMMEND NEW DRIVERS TAKE ON A LEASE.

If you want a "recommendation" - see if you can leave a vehicle at their Auburndale location - and leave the truck there for home time. Or just don't move down here. Take it from someone who's lived here for 40 years - SoFla (aside from the sunshine and beaches) SUCKS.

Shipper:

The customer who is shipping the freight. This is where the driver will pick up a load and then deliver it to the receiver or consignee.

Thanks for responding. Yes i did tell them I'm currently looking to relocate due to family issues. They said its ok. As far as leasing I know alot of people dont recommend it but its what i want to do. I've done more than enough research and I know its a major risk. They have floral loads

Most, if not all of Primes floral loads are very time sensitive and are team loads for that reason. Tropicana is down there, and there are sometimes loads with them. Took a load down outside Jacksonville last week and had to deadhead to Atlanta to get a load out.

Good luck to you, though. And look forward to having you join the company!

Deadhead:

To drive with an empty trailer. After delivering your load you will deadhead to a shipper to pick up your next load.

Yeah they do have floral loads from Southern FL. They take an entire day to load you, multiple pickups with a dozen or more drops that will take days to complete with driver unloads. And the best part- they pay roughly .85cpm to a lease operator. Needless to say, you will work hard that week but won't make a profit.

Ive done those loads before. I would rather deadhead out of the state.

CPM:

Cents Per Mile

Drivers are often paid by the mile and it's given in cents per mile, or cpm.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

^^^^ Daniel elaborates and verifies.

These are considered "gas money gigs" - guys that take them, do so knowing they're pretty much just paying for the FUEL to get back into the freight lanes. Most O/O's would rather deadhead out, than suffer the indignation of working for slave wages.

Now - if you're only going home once a month or so, as a lease op - you might be able to afford the hit. It also depends on how they pay and consider "dispatched miles".

So if your drop is in Orlando, and you D/H home to Miami - I don't think those miles are paid miles.

I mean hey - we all do what we gotta do to get home.

But, since it appears we can't really tell you anything ANYWAYS - since you have already decided to go lease right out of training, then move to MIA.

Last time I talked to Prime (and I'm out of Lauderdale, only 1/2 hour from MIA) they told me they'd take me, if I came on with someone as a team from down here (like, as in, BRING my own team partner), which demonstrates their reluctance to have drivers this far south.

There's a REASON WHY most trucking companies hiring maps, have a line drawn across florida, right around I-4 (Tampa/Orlando/Daytona) and don't hire south of there. Bad (cheap)/No Freight to get folks home.

Which brings me to - did Prime say that'd take you out of MIA - IF YOU LEASED? As in, was leasing a CONDITION?

Yes my family is currently living in fort lauderdale florida. So as far as leasing yes it wouldn't be a problem. They never discuss anything about team.
