Was up everyone , hope everyone is having a good week. I am going on my 8th month trucking experience pulling containers out of the Long beach CA port. I have 20k$$ saved up and really anxious to buy my first rig. ( 2014 Freightliner 48" sleeper with a 10 speed aproximately 300kmiles.) I have a really good opportunity to make upwards of 13k$ monthly.

The only thing i am having a really hard time with is insurance cost.

So far i have been quoted at 6k$ down with 2k$/month for 9 months ... I cannot afford that...

does anyone know where i can get cheaper insurance ? something around 3-4K$ down and $800-1200/ month.

Just a heads up. This site is primarily focused on drivers new to the industry. This topic has been pretty much banned here in the forums. Someone will hopefully post a link to that site for o/o information.

Ps. You will also likely get a few responses about your choice to go that route with only 8 months experience. Good luck

13K gross per month does not equate to much more than 3K net. (If you are lucky). You'll make much more as a Company driver, minus all of the headaches. A $5000.00 dollar repair bill can put you out of business. I would suggest you rethink your plan. Good Luck!

DAC:

Drive-A-Check Report

A truck drivers DAC report will contain detailed information about their job history of the last 10 years as a CDL driver (as required by the DOT).

It may also contain your criminal history, drug test results, DOT infractions and accident history. The program is strictly voluntary from a company standpoint, but most of the medium-to-large carriers will participate.

Most trucking companies use DAC reports as part of their hiring and background check process. It is extremely important that drivers verify that the information contained in it is correct, and have it fixed if it's not.

As others have pointed out, this site doesn't really deal with owner ops. For the info you are looking for I would suggest going to the ooida's website.

OOIDA:

Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association

Who They Are

OOIDA is an international trade association representing the interests of independent owner-operators and professional drivers on all issues that affect truckers. The over 150,000 members of OOIDA are men and women in all 50 states and Canada who collectively own and/or operate more than 240,000 individual heavy-duty trucks and small truck fleets.

Their Mission

The mission of OOIDA is to serve owner-operators, small fleets and professional truckers; to work for a business climate where truckers are treated equally and fairly; to promote highway safety and responsibility among all highway users; and to promote a better business climate and efficiency for all truck operators.

If I was you man, I would get more experience. Get to the 2 year mark then decide if its something that you really want to do.
