I love the police. They're usually super helpful and nice when I call them for help. I would imagine they are generally happy to help a trucker avoid trouble since they often have to deal with the consequences of drivers not calling. Kudos for having the humility to call and ask for help.
This is a really good story. Had a similar situation in NJ a while back.
Good to be able to count on these people.
A cop blocked a road to help me back into a street when I couldn't find where to enter at my stop. I went up to a group of them that where just talking about a break up they just did and asked for assistance. He told me to hurry up before I even started but it was nice of him to help lol
I used to be a part time cop myself and while some can be a little too hard nosed, (partly to stay alive) most really just want to help the public be safe. Keep in mind, many have that dream of being a truck driver themselves someday and just might be envying you so yes they're more than happy to help.
If we find ourselves unsure about a bridge weight rating. Clearance or any other roadway predicament, its our company policy to turn on the 4 ways, set the brakes and call 911. They say we pay more than enough in taxes and should request their help when unsure because its a heck of a lot easier than fixing any messes that might be caused by proceeding without assistance.
Extremely sound advice and a great story to laugh about and share later.

Just sayin...! LOL Pennsylvania has some handsome fellows in blue.
GPS did me wrong last night when I was trying to get back to my 01 after having left there by mistake. Problems with the load...but that's another story. Anyway, in the process of it getting me routed back, it had me turn down a road where half a mile or so later I had to make another right. Get there to find a "no right turns" sign, and to add to the fun, the bridge directly in front of me past where the turn was supposed to be had a "no trucks" sign! It was 1:30am, dark...tried to back out for a little bit before giving up. Was just too dark and too far with a hill behind me and a deep ditch on my right.
I called 911 and had them send out someone to help me. Two very nice gentlemen showed up, and one of them guided me all the way back to where I was going. Turned out that it was ok to cross that bridge, but I'd rather have done it with a cop ahead of me than try to do something like that myself and end up in a bigger mess.
My rookie month is still going strong! LOL
