If you really want to set yourself up for success when breaking into the industry, go to a private CDL school or one of the many company sponsored schools. Most companies will want a certificate stating you completed the 160 hour CDL course. Getting a CDL on your own will limit your opportunities big time.
A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
Joseph is 100% correct. It's possible to get your CDL without schooling but it's very difficult to find a job that way. The schooling isn't long enough or expensive enough to worry about getting around anyhow. If it was $25,000 at a four year university I'd say there might be a better way. But with only a few weeks to a couple of months of schooling and training, and the option of some of them even being free makes it only logical to pick a reputable school and go for it.
Here is some excellent reading on the subject:
A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.
Electric APUs have started gaining acceptance. These electric APUs use battery packs instead of the diesel engine on traditional APUs as a source of power. The APU's battery pack is charged when the truck is in motion. When the truck is idle, the stored energy in the battery pack is then used to power an air conditioner, heater, and other devices
Thank y'all so much. That's kind of what I was thinking but I just wanted to be sure.
I am actually in school right now with a guy who got his class A through a trucker family connection. He could not get hired without a school certificate showing the federally mandated requirements. It may be possible but I recommend getting that certificate first.

I have been told that you can get your CDL without going to a school or company sponsored training. If I do this route will companies still hire me if I pass my CDL and my DOT physical?
CDL:
Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
DOT:
Department Of Transportation
A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.
State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.
Company Sponsored Training:
A Company-Sponsored Training Program is a school that is owned and operated by a trucking company.
The schooling often requires little or no money up front. Instead of paying up-front tuition you will sign an agreement to work for the company for a specified amount of time after graduation, usually around a year, at a slightly lower rate of pay in order to pay for the training.
If you choose to quit working for the company before your year is up, they will normally require you to pay back a prorated amount of money for the schooling. The amount you pay back will be comparable to what you would have paid if you went to an independently owned school.
Company-sponsored training can be an excellent way to get your career underway if you can't afford the tuition up front for private schooling.
