Traffic circles have been rare in the USA. I grew up in the Los Angeles area, and I knew of only one traffic circle in Lakewood, CA. Now they are popping up everywhere.

Here's a video from Florida's DOT: Modern Roundabouts. I started the video at 3:45 to skip the introduction.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

They've been around (ahem) in Europe for years. They do eliminate traffic signal wait timjes and the dangers of left turns.

There's a truck stop off I-20 near Birmingham Alabama, that takes two or three roundabouts. One between the freeway and the Stop, then on exiting, a right turn only into another one where you U-turn back to the Interstate. And If you're heading west, of course #3 afterh the underpass to turn right onto the highway.

You will get used to them!

Interstate:

Commercial trade, business, movement of goods or money, or transportation from one state to another, regulated by the Federal Department Of Transportation (DOT).

Boston is (and has been) full of roundabouts for some years as well as the neighboring towns and states.

Nice thing about roundabouts is if lost or miss the exit, go around again.

One does not think of roundabouts being very common in the USA, but here in TN it is common to find them at the city courthouse or town square, people don't know they are basically a roundabout.

If you take rest breaks in casinos in the Southwestern states, you will see LOTS of roundabouts. I suspect that the casino developers and/or the states didn't want to pay for stop lights. When a casino is the only thing of any significance at an interstate exit, it's normally a roundabout on either side of the bridge instead of a light or a standard intersection.

Maybe the casinos are banking on people getting confused, and turned around. When they "escape" the roundabout, they might be headed back to the casino, and decide to spend another night.

Why the heck does Colorado love to put them at the end of off ramps?? That makes for some tight maneuvering. Hate them!!
