Well in my case, if the school accepts me then I'll be living in Tampa upon start date. My fiancé will remain in NYC until I'm done with schooling and hired by a company.

Trucking companies go by the ADDRESS ON YOUR LICENSE to determine whether you are in their hiring area.

So a SoFla resident, going to a Tampa school - will only get hired - if that company hires from his SoFla zip code - OR - if he changes his license to Tampa (and many companies still consider Tampa too far south). Also remember - NO PRIVATE SCHOOL (including county Vo-Techs and State Colleges) can GUARANTEE A HIRE.

This is Incorrect There are tons of companies that hire and you don't have to be in the Home state. Ie Swift, Stevens Covenant, Total Transportation and so on. If he lives In NY he can get his Permit there and attend school in FL and go back home with a Certificate and get his CDl.

double-quotes-end.png

Sorry - but trucking companies hiring areas go by your DECLARED RESIDENCE - which goes by the ADDRESS ON YOUR DRIVERS LICENSE. No one said you had to be in the COMPANIES HOME STATE (at least I didn't) but you do have to be from an area they hire from.

Companies have to GET YOU HOME FOR HOME TIME - this is the biggest hangup for those of us in South Florida - NO ONE HIRES FROM HERE - well, a few do actually - but the biggies - Swift, Prime, etc. DO NOT.

And if you look at the hiring maps for most companies - everything SOUTH OF I-4, is usually OUT OF THE HIRING AREA.

So it would be foolish to advise someone who is in an area that the company he wants to sign on with - DOESN'T HIRE OUT OF - that somehow going to a school in Tampa that hires graduates from that school - is going to change the fact that they DO NOT HIRE FROM HIS HOME ZIP CODE.

Same thing would go for someone from NYC coming down here to go to school - and expecting to get on with a company that DOESN'T HIRE FROM NYC ZIP CODES.

Rick

Again with the companies I listed this hasnt been an issue... I will double check but again shouldnt be an issue.. I know for a fact Stevens Cov and Swift do... They have yards to park truck while on Home time.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

While I understand that no school can GUARANTEE a hire, this school doesnt even accept you until you're pre-hired by one of their affiliated trucking companies.

With us you can start with less than $200 (DOT Physical, Drug Screen, and CDL Licence) out of pocket! Once you have been pre-hired by one of our approved trucking companies, we will finance your tuition with NO Credit Check and NO Co-Signors!

A pre-hire is not a guarantee either - but close to one. A pre-hire is an invitation to attend orientation after completing school.

I would be really careful about any agreement/contract you sign with the school - from the "fine print" on their website:

Financed Tuition: $5000.00 Paid in full upfront Tuition: $4000.00 CDL Test Fee: $200.00 USDOT Physical & Drug Test: $110.00 MVR: $10.00 Permit retakes: $10.00 Class A CDL fee: $81.25 The cost of our program is $5000.00 and there is about $400 worth of fees you will need for your DOT physical, drug test, CDL permit, CDL exam, and CDL License. But you don’t have to pay all of that up front if you don’t want to. You see, 100% of the companies we place our students with have up to 6-15 thousand dollars in tuition reimbursement. They will pay for your schooling just not up front. What we do is finance it for you, and then you get the company you go to work for help you pay it back. So all you need to get started is $200 out of pocket for Physical and License, and we will finance the rest of your fees and tuition. Our in house financing option doesn't even require a credit check. As long as you are qualified for job placement, you are qualified for financing options with Tampa Truck Driving School. What makes our financing even better is that your student loan payments don't begin until 60 days after you graduate. This gives you a full two months to get out there driving, start making some money before you have to start making payments towards your tuition loan.

You are putting yourself ON THE HOOK for a $5K schooling cost.

JUST BE CAREFUL.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

MVR:

Motor Vehicle Record

An MVR is a report of your driving history, as reported from your state Department of Motor Vehicles. Information on this report may include Drivers License information, point history, violations, convictions, and license status on your driving record.

Pre-hire:

What Exactly Is A Pre-Hire Letter?

Pre-hire letters are acceptance letters from trucking companies to students, or even potential students, to verify placement. The trucking companies are saying in writing that the student, or potential student, appears to meet the company's minimum hiring requirements and is welcome to attend their orientation at the company’s expense once he or she graduates from truck driving school and has their CDL in hand.

We have an excellent article that will help you Understand The Pre-Hire Process.

A Pre-Hire Letter Is Not A Guarantee Of Employment

The people that receive a pre-hire letter are people who meet the company's minimum hiring requirements, but it is not an employment contract. It is an invitation to orientation, and the orientation itself is a prerequisite to employment.

During the orientation you will get a physical, drug screen, and background check done. These and other qualifications must be met before someone in orientation is officially hired.

Moving to Tampa - then your fiancee is moving down? Nice area up there - a lot different from NYC.

Most trucking companies school reimbursement rate - is going to take quite awhile of employment, to repay that debt. And a FINANCE AGREEMENT IS A CONTRACT - please don't mince words with me. The school can instigate a collection action or lawsuit to recover the indebtedness.

From the information packet I downloaded from the school - you need to have a "checking account" to enter into the finance agreement with the school.

In house financing which requires the student must meet the requirements for job placement and have a valid checking account.

At least - if you take company training, complete it and work for the company - you are not under a separate contractual obligation.

Please note, we cannot guarantee anyone a job, but we will do our best to help you apply for open positions in the industry with reputable trucking firms.

Do you by any chance WORK for this school? Are a GRADUATE of this school?

There were a number of things in their info packet that threw up red flags for me. As with ANY CONTRACTUAL OBLIGATION that entails large sums of $$ - BE CAREFUL AND READ THE FINE PRINT.

I'm not going comment any further on this.

EPU:

Electric Auxiliary Power Units

Electric APUs have started gaining acceptance. These electric APUs use battery packs instead of the diesel engine on traditional APUs as a source of power. The APU's battery pack is charged when the truck is in motion. When the truck is idle, the stored energy in the battery pack is then used to power an air conditioner, heater, and other devices

Hmmm - thought Maryville TN looked kinda close to Knoxville where Tennessee Truck Driving School is located.

So essentially - we have an EMPLOYEE of a private school opining here. No BIAS going on - I'm sure...
