Shouldn't EVER have to re-test.
Though we've seen some states (california specifically) that are weird about re-testing endorsements.
The only endorsement the FMCSA REGS requires you to re-test on every renewal is HAZMAT. You also have to re-do your fingerprints/background for each HM renewal. HM renewals also cause your LICENSE TO EXPIRE EARLY, since they are a 4 year renewal (for BG checks) and most states CDL's are good for 6-7 years.

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
Explosive, flammable, poisonous or otherwise potentially dangerous cargo. Large amounts of especially hazardous cargo are required to be placarded under HAZMAT regulations
The CSA is a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) initiative to improve large truck and bus safety and ultimately reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities that are related to commercial motor vehicle
The FMCSA was established within the Department of Transportation on January 1, 2000. Their primary mission is to prevent commercial motor vehicle-related fatalities and injuries.
What Does The FMCSA Do?
As long as you keep your CDL and Medical Card current, your endorsements are good forever. The only exception is HazMat. That endorsement requires re testing every 3 or 4 years. I believe your background check must be updated too. I'm sure our resident endorsement specialist Rick will chime in and scold me if I posted the wrong information.

Yeah - I'm kinda the "rules & regs" guy, plus a consummate researcher (triple black belt in google-fu). Not nowhere - behind my desk, still in Fort Lauderdale - so I have a little more free time to help out around here.
