I graduated from TDI on 1/26/18. I was very close to going over the road but happened to see some local opportunities on Zip recruiter. I figured I would call some up and see if they would give me a shot. Ended up getting an offer from a septic company first. Needless to say I was reluctant to take it but would have if I had to in order to stay home more with my fiancé. Soon after that I got an offer from a lumber yard. $17/hr plus plenty of overtime. My last check for two weeks was around $2100. Needless to say, I'm very satisfied. I love my job and it is easy peasy. Don't get me wrong, it gets kinda stressful trying to get into some of these neighborhoods where they are building new homes. I am home every night but it's long hours. 15 hour days sometimes. But it's worth it because I get paid for every second of it.

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

Local fuel delivery? I believe Daniel had at least two years of experience, possibly three before he hired on with a petroleum tanker company.

It's highly doubtful anyone will hire an entry level driver for this type of work, they won't be able to insure you. In many cases they'll want 2 years accident free as a minimum.

The first year of driving has a very steep learning curve...tough enough. Add the increased risk hauling volatile liquid fuel and delivering it to retail gas stations (very close quarters) is something not recommended.

Get at least a year of safe driving before considering this.

Im still confused....but im a blonde lol

Why is the "one year tractor trailer experience" better than 1 yr OTR? If you can't get hired locally without a year, then how do you get hired right out of school?

i went on the sites of the companies listed in the thread and all but UPS says one year required, it says "must meet minimum requirements". SAIA, OD, Estes...all say 1 year.

the fuel tankers say 2 yrs for Tractor trailer and hazmat Coroluzzi, Venezia and others.

So do you just apply everywjere and see who takes you with a new CDL in hand and no training?

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Rainy, I literally applied for like 20 local jobs. Most of them turned me down. I was upfront about my experience level but I also graduated with a %96 from school so that also helped me in the interview for my current job. I think it showed that I really wanted this.
