Don R asked:

Thank you G-Town! Help me understand this, since my current DOT card is probably no good, should I spend my money to get a new one or wait until I apply to a trucking company and they will issue one for me if I passed the company physical?

Considering your circumstance, I'd start applying like crazy, an invalid medical card basically invalidates your CDL if enough time passes. As you apply, and they begin to reply back to you, find out what they require.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

No, I went to a private driving school. Errol may be correct though. Mine is due and safety sent me a message saying that I could come by and pick up a voucher for one of their approved clinics.

As a side note, I finally made it home. Three weeks from PA to CA. LOL!

Oh while I was up in NY the Walmart DC in Johnstown NY I think it was tried to recruit me. "They love me...they really love me..." LOL!

Good that the "Love You" ! LOL I just got off the phone with a Walk in clinic near me, it will cost me $80.00 to get it done to be safe, like G-Town said if I don't then it could invalidate my CDL License. Have you driven the semi truck in NYC or outskirts? I hear a lot of drivers do not like to go to NYC ? Three weeks out, wow a long trip!

No, I was out for 48 days and gave them 2 weeks notice to get me home. It took them 3 weeks to get me home for a total of 69 days out. I'm at my delivery now waiting to be unloaded and I'm about 40 miles from the terminal here in Jurupa Valley CA.

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.
