I wouldn't mind paying a little if the data is reliable. Has anyone out there ever used it?

Being a rookie here (well not quite even that), I hope I can ask a rookie question. How do you drivers get your underpass clearance information? Do these GPS's provide them? Thanks

i found an app called "Smart Trucker Route" that is supposed to have that kinda stuff in it. Its a pay app and i was not gonna start testing it until i got in with a trainer.

Hey, I thought most of the trucks come with their own GPS in the dash, or with a seperate GPS unit like the Rand(?).

Lol your joking right? Have to be. But no the GPS is all yours to pay for. Know why drivers don't buy a new GPS every time it messed up? But they bought it and don't want to break it. Now if the company bought the GPS I guarantee you the drivers would break it cause they got mad. Hell look at half the fuel pumps at truck stop. Broken parts. Some doors to the full pump barely hanging on. Yes drivers broke them. The plastic covers to the Def pumps missing. Yep you guessed it. Drivers tore them off.

Sorry because I have been down of drivers the last few days. Even though I love the trucking industry I will still call a spade and spade.

So why are they some of them so ****ed off?

So why are they some of them so ****ed off?

That is the million dollar question. For every driver that is po'ed there would be a different answer.

His company. The last shipper he had to deal with. His dispatcher. The 4 wheeler that just cut him off.

The biggest problem, when most of them get ****ed off they forget they are adults and act like spoiled brats.

All you have to do is watch at a busy truck stop. A rookie driver having a rough time backing. Somewhere a "super trucker" will start yelling and cussing on the radio.

I have gotten ****ed off from time to time. But I also have noticed that it usually happens when I have pushed myself too much. Not stopping and taking a lunch break. Pushing a 14 hr day when I had only planned on a 12 hr day. Etc.

But when I get ****ed off, I don't let my inner child take over. Or at least I haven't yet.

Guyjax, bravo. You said a mouth full.

Keep it safe out here. The life you save might be your own. Joe S

Shipper:

The customer who is shipping the freight. This is where the driver will pick up a load and then deliver it to the receiver or consignee.

Dispatcher:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

There are plenty of times out there where our character is tested...I mean really tested. Some people just can`t handle the set backs, or let other`s sorry attitude effect them. No matter how mad I get, I tell myself that I have been in much worse situations and have lived through them relatively unscathed. It always gets better. A good attitude is a must to succeed in this industry, other wise one would just be getting by.

As for the GPS, I do have one supplied by the company, it is part of the e-log system (qualcomm) but I do not use it. I use a Rand Mcnally TN 720 instead. Backed up with an atlas of course.

Qualcomm:

Omnitracs (a.k.a. Qualcomm) is a satellite-based messaging system with built-in GPS capabilities built by Qualcomm. It has a small computer screen and keyboard and is tied into the truck’s computer. It allows trucking companies to track where the driver is at, monitor the truck, and send and receive messages with the driver – similar to email.

I just found a new free app called Trucker's Path that seems pretty sweet with locations for Low Clearances, Scales, Rest Areas, Wal-marts, Truck Stops, Parking, Weigh Stations, Truck Wash, etc.

So should we buy one before we graduate CDL school? Is it difficult to rely on just the paper maps? Money's a bit tight right now.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

You could wait and make your decision during training. Your trainer will have one. My Qualcomm has navigation, I use that and my GPS and they often give different routes. I go over the details of the route and check the atlas to decide which I will follow.
