Inverter.
Just my 2. The only time I run the truck is for A/C or if I'm going to run the microwave.
My company has both in our trucks. But after experiencing the apu breaking down in 90 degree heat and not having the ability to idle the truck for a/c, I'd choose idling over having an apu.
Of course, I say that as I'm lounging in the bunk with the apu chugging away blasting ice cold a/c, while my tv, dorm fridge, and hot plate are all plugged into my inverter.
It's all great until the apu conks out, then it all goes away.
When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.
On tractor trailers, and APU is a small diesel engine that powers a heat and air conditioning unit while charging the truck's main batteries at the same time. This allows the driver to remain comfortable in the cab and have access to electric power without running the main truck engine.
Having an APU helps save money in fuel costs and saves wear and tear on the main engine, though they tend to be expensive to install and maintain. Therefore only a very small percentage of the trucks on the road today come equipped with an APU.
How about an APU , inverter, and Opti Idle. I say no complaints. Oh, and a Wabasto bunk heater thrown in for kicks. 2 sources of power, 2 sources of AC, 3 sources of heat.

Now THAT is the ideal setup. Best of all worlds.
We have the Webasto bunk heater also, but again if the apu dies it's only a matter of time till I lose the batteries.
The auto idle shutoff is a killer. But on the flipside, if/when the apu goes on the fritz, I go to the nearest hotel and the company pays for it.
