I’m trying to understand why there are so few companies that are willing to hire CDL holders that live in Alaska. If the industry needs drivers as bad they say why does it matter where someone lives?

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

I think it is about the hiring area more so. Companies don't want to foot the bill to get you home for home time.

There are great companies in Alaska, not sure if you are new to the industry and they don't have companies that take on new drivers, but have you tried talking to any of them?

I remember Alyeska, and Carlile when I lived in Fairbanks.

From what I understand, it's a matter of getting you home for home time. If they don't have freight going near your place of residence they don't hire you.

I'm not sure if they do it for Alaska, but Schneider has been posting a gig where they will FLY you home, then fly you to where you're needed. Maybe check out Schneider website and see if they're doing that by inputting your zip code. Also, you can try to look at jobs on this site...Apply For Truck Driving Jobs They don't need CDL holders. They need Reliable, SAFE drivers.

I believe you are correct Rob. During my short time there I remember meeting a team that stayed out about 2-3 months, then Schneider would fly them home for their home time. That was 2 years ago though.

I agree with Rob, just call around.

Did a quick search on their site, they do offer it in Fairbanks (not sure where you are) it's called jet set driver. Schneider says its open to all CDL holders. With hometime every 3 weeks. I'm not sure if other companies offer something similar.
