Would being around secondhand smoke from somebody smoking weed, or being in a room filled with smoke cause you to test positive for a drug test, both UA and/or hair follicle? I got thinking about this earlier in the week as a neighbor's been using causing the smell to linger into my apartment (office got it taken care of). I do not put my CDL at risk by partaking in this, nor do I associate myself with those who do. This is my lively hood and I'm going to keep it that way. This is strictly curiosity as I also wonder how that would affect a driver (who obviously cant use) in a state where its legal but they may be around it more often.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Not normally. However, if one was in that situation with constant , every day exposure, then yes, highly likely. As long as a Professional makes the Competent decision to not Use or Be Around Illegal Drugs, or Those that go with that Bad Decision, they have nothing to ever worry about. Real simple but lots of stupid people just don't get it.

I have to agree with Packrat. In my personal (not medical) opinion I would think as long as you were not in the same room as it was being smoked in for a period of time I would think you would be okay. However be warned that if you fail a drug screen they will not likely buy your story as I am sure they have heard every excuse before. Not saying yours isn't true I am just speaking from their point of view.

Definitely, there is no valid reason that you could provide for a failed drug test and be believed. Regardless if it's legal in the state your in or not it's a no go. I don't know if drivers who fail don't understand we follow federal law as CDL holders or they feel they're untouchable. Honestly never have touched the stuff and never will as long as I'm a CDL holder. I worked my tail off to earn my CDL and will do whatever it takes to protect it. I didn't think that a little exposure would make you test positive but i wasn't sure.

Thank you

I’m not a truck driver yet hopin to become one soon. However, if it’s something that you are worried about it you can purchase a home kit and test yourself. I doubt it’s as accurate as a DOT drug test but if it shows positive then you know your options a little better. Hope this helps.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

I lived in an apartment that wreaked of weed everyday from multiple “neighbors” who all smoked. I passed my drug test 2 weeks ago. I had the same concern but someone told me that unless you were in the same room as the smokers then it wouldn’t come up. Whether I was lucky or not will remain a mystery. I’m in Prime’s PSD program now. Good luck to you!

PSD:

Prime Student Driver

Prime Inc has a CDL training program and the first phase is referred to as PSD. You'll get your permit and then 10,000 miles of on the road instruction.

The following is from Prime's website:

Prime’s PSD begins with you obtaining your CDL permit. Then you’ll go on the road with a certified CDL instructor for no less than 75 hours of one-on-one behind the wheel training. After training, you’ll return to Prime’s corporate headquarters in Springfield, Missouri, for final CDL state testing and your CDL license.

Obtain CDL Permit / 4 Days

  • Enter program, study and test for Missouri CDL permit.
  • Start driving/training at Prime Training Center in Springfield, Missouri.
  • Work toward 40,000 training dispatched miles (minimum) with food allowance while without CDL (Food allowance is paid back with future earnings).

On-the-Road Instruction / 10,000 Miles

  • Train with experienced certified CDL instructor for 3-4 weeks in a real world environment.
  • Get 75 hours of behind-the-wheel time with one-on-one student/instructor ratio.
  • Earn 10,000 miles toward total 40,000 miles needed.

Rob, I misunderstood your question. If you were in the same room, you were smoking it without even touching the blunt. It gave you a buzz! Many failed the drug test in my class. Don’t be one of those. Take however long you need to clear your system.

That said, if you feel you can get buzzed once you have your CDL?, please reconsider trucking as a career path. For one, most companies do random testing & a failed drug test is the last thing you want on you DAC. Most importantly, the responsibility of driving an 80,000 missile on wheels with so many peoples lives in your hands in nothing to take lightly.

Good luck!

DAC:

Drive-A-Check Report

A truck drivers DAC report will contain detailed information about their job history of the last 10 years as a CDL driver (as required by the DOT).

It may also contain your criminal history, drug test results, DOT infractions and accident history. The program is strictly voluntary from a company standpoint, but most of the medium-to-large carriers will participate.

Most trucking companies use DAC reports as part of their hiring and background check process. It is extremely important that drivers verify that the information contained in it is correct, and have it fixed if it's not.

I was not present, honestly don't even know the neighbor. The smell was present in my unit which got me thinking about it. The only person I'm associated with who uses drugs (weed) is my brother in law but he only does it at his own home and I rarely even speak to him for other reasons, much less see him. This post was strictly curiosity, I'm not a smoker never have, and don't plan on it. This isn't me trying to find an excuse to use to beat a test. I understand the responsibility I am taking on by operating a CMV and I do not take it lightly. As I said just curious, but I definitely agree with your concern regarding those who put themself in that position.

  • Has a gross vehicle weight rating or gross combination weight rating of 10,001 pounds or more

My apologies Rob. I stand corrected. But I did have the same fears and nothing came of it. I multiple neighbors smoking & my apartment would smell nasty. I passed prime’s Drug test & am now midway through my PSD phase. I’m supposed to be back in Sprimo next weekend to test out. Good luck going forward!
