Who Will Hire Me?

I'm a new driver with only 5 months of OTR experience. I made stupid mistakes, got stuck in the mud, backed into a truck and damaged a tailight while backing, and Jack knifed on an off ramp during heavy rain. All these were preventable in their eyes. They technically fired me but made it look like I quit but I'm still having horrible trouble finding anything. Did anyone know of any companies that will hire with a bad dac?

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

DAC:

Drive-A-Check Report

A truck drivers DAC report will contain detailed information about their job history of the last 10 years as a CDL driver (as required by the DOT).

It may also contain your criminal history, drug test results, DOT infractions and accident history. The program is strictly voluntary from a company standpoint, but most of the medium-to-large carriers will participate.

Most trucking companies use DAC reports as part of their hiring and background check process. It is extremely important that drivers verify that the information contained in it is correct, and have it fixed if it's not.

All these were preventable in their eyes.

First you need to accept responsibility. that line you wrote sounds like you dont believe they were preventable. They were. Slow down and GOAL. The mud thing well...donr park or drive a heavy truck in smooshy ground.

The important thing is to learn from your mistakes and explain what you have learned to any potential companies. They dont want to hear "it was the weather....the truck was not properly maintained by the company...some guy cut me off.." etc. They want to hear, "I made rookie mistakes and realize i was going too fast off that ramp considering the weather conditions. i know to slow down in the future".

i would try everywhere. and it might be yo your advantage they did not put termination on your DAC.

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.

You got me wrong, I realize I made mistakes. Maybe I came off wrong. I know I had issues and I've learned from them I tell companies that but they still turn me down. It's very depressing. I just need another chance, but at this point I feel like giving up.

When a new student goes through driving school, Safety is the foundation of all that you learn. When a new driver hits the road, safe truck operation is so what it's all about.

It's true, newbies will have accidents. It's almost expected. These should still be learning experiences. But after a while, if a new driver continues to be sloppy, building a record of mishaps, oopses and boo boos with the company equipment, they become less and less desirable to any trucking company. Sounds like you have drifted into this category.

... also, a jacknife accident with a truck is not an "oops" accident. That's on your DAC and could be the kiss of death to a trucking career.

No, she got you right. You weren't taking responsibility for your mistakes. You are the captain of that ship. It's critical you approach your job as if putting a scratch on that truck is life or death.

The companies that seem to give opportunities when most won't are CR England, Swift, Carolina Cargo, and CRST. Just apply everywhere you can and see who will give you an opportunity.

You should probably order a copy of your DAC if you haven't already to see what's on there. It won't be good, but make sure it's accurate.

It's not going to be easy finding another opportunity but don't give up. Someone out there will give you a shot. You just have to take full advantage of it and make sure you keep that safety record clean.

They listed 4 accidents on my dac two of them were because I got stuck and had to be towed, I don't feel as if I was putting anyone in danger by trying to avoid backing down a small country road and risking running into someone for two miles (so I tried to turn around) the jackknife I know was bad, I could have gone slower and I take full responsibility for it. Backing into the truck was a rookie mistake I should have got out to check myself but I thought I had it. I realize how important safety is, I made mistakes and I feel like I learned from them. I've already tried a few of those and was turned down.

Brett listed Swift, CR England, Carolina Cargo, and CRST for those who seek second chances. did you try them?

how long ago were these accidents? how long have you not been driving?

did you try asking your original company to be re trained?
