My latest job closed and now I am in a pickle as I have to find a new way to make a living. It's kind of funny how the government claims all is getting better with our Economy as I am finding in near impossible to find a job that pays enough to pay my bills.

Anyway enough of the sour grapes. I am looking to move on to OTR Trucking and taking my wife with me on the road. My License has no issues what so ever as I have not had any violations in over 30 years. Guess I just gave up my age LOL 52.

The only thing that worries me on weather I can get a job in OTR is high blood pressure. I is under control at 120 over 70 with some magic pills.

Is that a deal breaker ?

I am also looking at Swift to get started , However I am in Santa Cruz Ca and I am not sure they would want someone from this part of the country. Any suggestions for OTR companies that would work with me ?

I am new to this site and forum and I would like to thank everyone here for the good reading and learning I am getting here.

Sincerely Joe

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

Welcome Joe !!!! We are here for all your trucking questions. Your high blood pressure is fine !!! Its under control with medication, and thats fine for trucking. Being in CA probably won't bother Swift, since they run alot of freight out of there all the time. So you will be able to get by the house alot easier than living, say, in FL. Be sure and start some studying here, with Company-Sponsored Training (even tho you have chosen Swift), to give you a better all around look at trucking schools. And here, High Road Training Program, to give you all the instruction you can get BEFORE you go to school ! Its not an easy study tool, but its the best there is, and its all free !!! And of course, all the folks here at TT are here to help you with any issues, or questions you may have.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Company-sponsored Training:

A Company-Sponsored Training Program is a school that is owned and operated by a trucking company.

The schooling often requires little or no money up front. Instead of paying up-front tuition you will sign an agreement to work for the company for a specified amount of time after graduation, usually around a year, at a slightly lower rate of pay in order to pay for the training.

If you choose to quit working for the company before your year is up, they will normally require you to pay back a prorated amount of money for the schooling. The amount you pay back will be comparable to what you would have paid if you went to an independently owned school.

Company-sponsored training can be an excellent way to get your career underway if you can't afford the tuition up front for private schooling.

Welcome aboard Joe!

We also have an excellent listing of Truck Driving Jobs. Punch in your zip code and you'll find a long list of companies that hire from your area. But Swift is based out West so you'll have no problems there.

Starcar your a woman?!!! *wink* Well since there is no male/female identifiers on profile except a picture if one chooses to put one up i can see how that mistake could be made.

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.

Yeah...I should really change my pic...since I hate my Harley, and I"m gonna sell it and build a custom trike...It gonna be cool, but it sounds really weird...a trike out of a subaru !!! So I'll haveta chase down a pic...and then send it to Brett...cuz I'm electronically challenged...and don't know how to do that stuff...and I'm Irish...and I don't wanna learn rofl-3.gif
