I have my Texas CDL Learners permit and I will have a 1 year DOT medical card by May 15th. The doctor gave me a 30 day DOT card because I have Sleep Apnea and did not use my Cpap Machine enough. So I was told to come back. I have been using it now so I should be able to get the 1 year DOT card.

My question is which company should I work for between Prime or USA Trucking?? Which company offers best home time, good pay, Solo routes between Prime or USA Trucking ?? Also easiest company to qualify for. I got 2 DUI’s. 2002 and 2012. And I need to take an Urine drug test not Hair Test.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

Sleep Apnea:

A physical disorder in which you have pauses in your breathing, or take shallow breaths, during sleep. These pauses can last anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes. Normal breathing will usually resume, sometimes with a loud choking sound or snort.

In obstructive sleep apnea, your airways become blocked or collapse during sleep, causing the pauses and shallow breathing.

It is a chronic condition that will require ongoing management. It affects about 18 million people in the U.S.

CPAP:

Constant Positive Airway Pressure

CPAP is a breathing assist device which is worn over the mouth or nose. It provides nighttime relief for individuals who suffer from Sleep Apnea.

With that laundry list, I would not recommend a Private CDL School. That 2nd DUI may prove to be problematic. Most Carriers would overlook the 2002 DUI, but 2 in any time period may be rough. Don't limit yourself to just the 2 Companies that you mentioned. This will take some work and perseverance on your end to make it work. The fact that you don't want to submit to a hair follicle test raises my radar big time. What drugs have you been using, and how long since you quit? Start contacting recruiters and filling out applications. Before you submit to ANY drug test, hair or urine, you had best be clean of any illicit substance for a MINIMUM of 6 months. ALCOHOL included. One failed drug test, pre employment or otherwise, will effectively ruin your chances of ever being hired. Here is some suggested reading for you, you have the time.

Becoming A Truck Driver: The Raw Truth About Truck Driving

Hypertension:

Abnormally high blood pressure.

BMI:

Body mass index (BMI)

BMI is a formula that uses weight and height to estimate body fat. For most people, BMI provides a reasonable estimate of body fat. The BMI's biggest weakness is that it doesn't consider individual factors such as bone or muscle mass. BMI may:

  • Underestimate body fat for older adults or other people with low muscle mass
  • Overestimate body fat for people who are very muscular and physically fit

It's quite common, especially for men, to fall into the "overweight" category if you happen to be stronger than average. If you're pretty strong but in good shape then pay no attention.

Well you have 2 DUI and say you can’t pass a hair follicle test, so I think you are limiting your choices by the past decisions.

Did you get your permit on your own or did you attend a school and get sent home for cpap compliance issues?

Good luck

I studied and take test on my own. Went and got my own DOT card on my own but only given a 30 day card. I am going back on May 15th and should get a 1 year DOT card. I was trying to make my self a little more employable.

It doesn't. That is a minimum of what you need and even after getting that card, you will get re examined by a company doctor.

Hi and welcome.

I wrote an article to give you some insight. I work for.Prime and was told by recruiting there is a 1 DUI limit and any criminal past must be more than 10 years old.

What You Need to Know Before CDL Training

If you ever failed or refused a drug test, along with the DUIs, you are wasting your time. Many companies have a once in a lifetime limit for DUIs. You are going to have to try applying everywhere and see what offers you get. As far a good pay routes, and home.time.... your past will limit that. you may have to accept lower pay for a year or so to prove yourself before moving to a higher paying company.
