I live in Oklahoma, my kids are in SoCal. If I decide to go with a big company like Swift, would they be able to alternate my home times between SoCal and Oklahoma? Thanks in advance.

Your home time is where you want it to be. I got off the road with Swift about a year ago. At that time a driver would request home time about a week ahead and simply gave a zip code. You would get dispatched so you end up near there. Those only works on a company's service area, so being with a national company like Swift helps a lot. You can explain your desire to your Driver Manager to make your arrangement easier to work out.

Welcome to Trucking Truth, Mike. It sounds like you're investigating this career, so I'll post our TT "starter kit":

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Driver Manager:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

I alternated with Schneider. I live in Florida. Took hometime in Carlisle, PA to be at my Son’s wedding. Took hometime in Columbus, OH (about once a quarter) to visit with friends and once took it in Syracuse, NY to visit an old friend.

This flexibility is a definite advantage the large carriers have over smaller ones.
