So you want a company to let you use their truck, pay for an instructor, and then just maybe you will do them the honor of letting them hire you? Hope it works out for you.
Hi, Jim. Sorry to break this to you, but to drive for any large (actually, "not small") company, you must go through a current 160 hour training class.
I taught at Swift's Academy. I had a few OTR veterans come through, even a retired Army motor pool Chief who could do a full pre-trip backwards, forwards and probably inside out. All these people had to do was ace each of the tests and they were outtathere.
It's a pretty hard and fast rule now to have to take the course even if you're out 6 months. So your best bet is to simply Apply For Truck Driving Jobs and explain your situation to the recruiter.
Good luck!
OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.
I was off the road for only five months and I was worried about getting hired! After that many years, I'm going to agree that you will have to start all over with any major company. It's not all about your miles and experience. The biggest factor will be with insurance companies and risk assessment.
It sucks, I know, but these are the facts.

I am a driver with 17 yrs experience of driving many types trucks and equipment, However..... currently i am not a CDL holder, I was forced to surrender my CDL for allowing my physical to expire for 3 yrs while off my driving duties due to medical. That's is all taken care of now, So I am searching for a company that will use their truck, and pay for the instructor for me to re-take my CDL again so i my return to work. More than likely for this very company that works this out for me.
