Hello All, i am looking to start my own bus company i have to get my CDL to do anything more then 13 Passengers and was thinking i might as well get my class A if i have to get a class B. However, i have a Medical Marijuana card in the state of New York to treat my anxiety which my doctor filed under PTSD as it is one of the prerequisites for a prescription and he claimed it falls into that category so my question is as follows. Will a Medical Marijuana card (or other medicine prescribed by the doctor) effect my CDL now or in the future

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

There are many legal medications they will not permit in trucking. They will not allow anything that can make you drowsy or affects your cognition, including marijuana.

You're going to start a business governed by a federal agency and wonder if the use of a substance that is illegal at the federal level will be a problem?

Yes you will never get any CDL with a positive marijuana result period. It is Federally illegal therefore a disqualification.

CDL:
