Hey, Paul.

The DUIs were so long ago that someone will hire you. There will not be many companies, though. Every company has its own qualifications, so you won't know who will give you an opportunity until you apply.

Western Express and Carolina Cargo are two companies you should definitely speak with. They may give you an opportunity. But don't stop there. Apply like crazy to as many companies as possible.

Could I rent a truck and drive independent?

I believe you're referring to leasing or owning a truck, and the answer is no, you don't want to do that. You'll want to stick with being a company driver. There isn't enough money in owning or leasing a truck to compensate you for the risk and commitment involved. We never recommend that path to anyone.

Try to get on with one of the Paid CDL Training Programs. That's the best path into this career in our opinion.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

As Brett mentions - the risk/reward ratio just doesn't make sense - and that goes DOUBLE (QUADRUPLE) for someone who doesn't know the first thing about trucking.

The startup costs are enormous, as are the monthly costs (insurance, regulatory, etc.). That, and why would you "buy yourself a job" (because that's exactly what you are doing), without even knowing if you're cut out for it.

Find a company that will hire you - don't be tempted by offers to "lease a truck from them and be your own business owner", because you are NOT.

Old Dui's Paully,

Getting Hired with 4 DUI CONVICTIONS over 22 years out may or not be a problem. Most Companies want NO DUI CONVICTION in previous 7-10 years, HOWEVER, D.U.I. convictions usually reside on ones' Driving Record for EVERMORE.

My LAST DUI conviction in a 4 wheel vehicle on a Class C License was August '91 and it's still listed on State Driving Record AND there have been some Well Known Large Carriers and Smaller Carriers that stated through their Safety Departments: "ANY such Alcohol or Drug Conviction, regardless of time since, renders applicant non compliant."

CHEERS!!
