I currently drive for Werner and it has taken me all of 4 months to get totally sick and fed up with them?

I am considering US Xpress. Do they use e-logs and have EZPass in their trucks?

What is the overall consensus of this company?

David, how long have you been driving?

David...are an experienced driver? or are you fresh out of school ??? We highly recommend that you stick with your first company for atleast a year...but sometimes there are circumstances that just can't be tolerated..so we understand that, also. Also...I do believe, but don't quote me...that US Express has all automatics...there is rumor of a new law, that if you drive ( or trained on) an automatic, then your license will be restricted...something to think about.....

I currently drive for US Xpress. We have e-logs (DriverTech system, which takes getting use to after using QualComm), we have E-ZPass, Kansas Pass, Florida Pass, all sorts of passes, don't think you'd have to go through a toll anywhere in the U.S. and pay cash.

We DO NOT have all automatics. There is a mix, some autos and some manuals. I have a 10-speed International ProStar, another guy on my account has a 8-speed Peterbilt, another guy has an automatic Peterbilt I think. It's just the luck of the draw on what transmission you get.

US Xpress has been good to me so far. I just wish they had a tanker division! smile.gif

Not sure what difference you'd see versus Werner. Both are large companies with operations throughout the U.S. Are you sure your issue is with Werner and not your dispatcher specifically?

Qualcomm:

Omnitracs (a.k.a. Qualcomm) is a satellite-based messaging system with built-in GPS capabilities built by Qualcomm. It has a small computer screen and keyboard and is tied into the truck’s computer. It allows trucking companies to track where the driver is at, monitor the truck, and send and receive messages with the driver – similar to email.

Dispatcher:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

I get a lot of e-mails from US Express trying to get me to come over there. We have a lot of former Werner drivers come to our company lately though. Not sure if they just got a run of dispatchers or management issues recently or what is going on. I agree that if it is your first job you should try your best to stick it out for the first year. There will be similar BS with any company until you have been there for awhile or are an experienced driver and they know better than to push too hard. I think all companies are pushing students really hard to see what they are made of and if they will hang in there or quit. Good luck whatever you decide.

What the issue is with some Werner drivers. I currently drive for Werner and I have a great dispatcher I get a long with great. Have more miles then I can possibly do legal but then again I know how large companies run and I have set myself up to make the miles we get.

Now solo drivers are in a different spot. They are up against the clock all the time due to being on Elogs ,loading/unloading or just weather related.

See David the problems you are having now, whatever they might be, will not change by going to US EXPRESS. If your a solo driver you will have the same issues a solo driver has at any company. And not to mention going to a new company you start at the bottom of the load boards again and have to prove yourself all over again.

So what issues are you having right now at Werner? Need to identify them right now cause if you can't I can almost guarantee You will have the same issues all over again at a different company.

I know we used to have a member here at Trucking Truth that drove for Us Express a few years ago and he said he finally had to quit because his dispatch was using all his available hours and running to much and they would not give him a break other than the 10 hours you legally had to take. All I can say is so what? That is why we are out here....to run miles and delivery freight.

Let's compare the companies but I will tell you they are close to being cut from the same clothe.....

Elogs......yes they both have them

Both are mainly dry van fleets with a few other divisions Thrown in here and there.

Both are large companies and their business models are pretty much identical...run as many loads as they can and if a driver can not finish the load switch him out so the load can keep running.

Both companies have well maintained equipment. Better than a lot of other companies.

Pay is pretty close to being the same and is based on experience.

So yea both companies could be each others twin so there is on 3 things that can be the issue....dispatcher......or driver attitude or .....combination of both.

Elog:

Electronic Onboard Recorder

Electronic Logbook

A device which records the amount of time a vehicle has been driven. If the vehicle is not being driven, the operator will manually input whether or not he/she is on duty or not.

Dry Van:

A trailer or truck that that requires no special attention, such as refrigeration, that hauls regular palletted, boxed, or floor-loaded freight. The most common type of trailer in trucking.

Welcome aboard David!

I agree 100% with the sentiments of those above - US Xpress is a very good company but there isn't any reason you shouldn't be able to do just as well with Werner. And you've only just started. Four months is barely enough time for your own dispatcher to learn your truck number let alone develop a good reputation throughout the company with people like load planners and operations managers. It takes time to develop good relationships and a solid reputation which is what will ultimately get you a lot of miles. If you change companies now you're going to start completely over from scratch at the bottom again.

We'd love to help you work out the issues you're having at Werner if we can. That's a huge company with a ton of equipment, a lot of different opportunities, and solid earnings year in and year out. It would be great to see you stick it out a bit longer and try to make some changes before jumping ship.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

EPU:

Electric Auxiliary Power Units

Electric APUs have started gaining acceptance. These electric APUs use battery packs instead of the diesel engine on traditional APUs as a source of power. The APU's battery pack is charged when the truck is in motion. When the truck is idle, the stored energy in the battery pack is then used to power an air conditioner, heater, and other devices

I'm currently a Student and a recruiter came in and talked to us from US Express, I'm interested in getting a current drivers point of view on US Express with some questions that I have. I have read on here some good things about US Express, and also some negative comments.

Unless it's something that can't be said here at all it would be better to discuss it here than it would be privately. That way everyone can learn more about US Xpress.
