You will need to test in a manual transmission for a class A if you do not want the restriction regardless of what your class B is.
What's your plan for obtaining your class A? Private or Paid CDL Training Programs or is your employer doing hands on training?
A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
Sure you will. Driving a Class A is a combination vehicle , with an entirely different set of nuances. Big difference with the weight and handling characteristics, plus the fact that you've got an extra 53 feet of another vehicle behind the cab.
A vehicle with two separate parts - the power unit (tractor) and the trailer. Tractor-trailers are considered combination vehicles.
Rob t, going private with it, the construction out fit i work for year round is helping me obtain my class a for their low boy, but they have 3 tractors and trailers right now two manual 72 footers, well one on road the others down for repair, AND the third is a goose neck 40 foot auto single axle. Pretty much the reason i asked because for the road test ive been having issies parallel parking the 72 footer, so far ive been only able to get it 2 feet from the curb insted of one foot. I feel its almost impossible, eben my trainer with 11 years experance can only get it 2 foot.
When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.
But understandable pack rat, i am ok at backin gbn up worked at a scrap yard for years backing and swapping trailors just learnimg the on road aspects of things thank you again guys
Try 72feet. Nice looong lowboy :) bring it on, it runs in my blood my father was a trucker for 30 some odd years of his life before passing. Heres to you dad :)
Thats what figured, thank you very much, guess the search for a manual tractor starts now.
Sorry for the reply’s being all over the place. Never used this site before, and just realized all comments /reply’s are looked over first before posting so I hope you guys didn’t get confused with my reply’s. :p
Maybe I'm missing something here but you are talking tractor/trailer combos right? Can't you just hook up one of the manuals up to the 40 footer on test day?

Yea I would if I could. The 40’ for some reason has electric brakes on the trailer and the Manuel tractors are not set up from electric brakes. Lol

So i have been looking for information all afternoon but havent found it yet and havent called the motor vehicle office seeings i hate being on hold but i might just have to, haha. I live in nys and i currently have a cdl class b with no restrictions for the transmission. I can operate and know now is drive a truck with an unsynchronized transmission. I want to upgrade to A. seeings i already passed one skills test with a manual, would i still need to find a manual tractor so i do not have the no manual transmissions restriction? I am asuming i still need a manual but had to ask. Thank you guys a head of time
