First Time Poster-Please let me know if I'm in the wrong place.

I have passed my CDL written test and have the permit. Now I need to get some time behind the wheel and access to a truck and trainer to pass the driving portion. I have lived in and towed a 30' camping trailer for the past 2 years and have gotten better at backing and other driving skills with a trailer. (I know it isn't the same by a long shot. I'm not kidding myself.)

Currently I am not interested in driving for other companies. I own a circus and need to tow my own show around in the future. It will all fit into one 53' trailer.

Is there a place to find people willing to do this type of work? I am located in the Orlando, FL area. Any advice is appreciated.

Thank you, Kirk

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

^^^^^ Yep, or a friend. Can't think of anyone that would take on that liability and add you to their insurance, other than a family member or friend. OR the local TDDS.

Best to you, though! I actually grew up in Florida, and LOVE a good circus~!!

As Big Scott mentioned look into truck driving schools. Roadmaster is big in FL and the Tampa school wanted like $9,000 for 4 weeks of school when I checked them out about 5 years ago. The community college in St Petersburg was only $2500 for 12 weeks. I'm sure prices are similar in Orlando. 1 other option would be a "1 day CDL" program that charges about $600 for a couple hours of instruction before taking your test but I think you would benefit most with going through a school.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.
