Hey guys I drive a international with a apu i was told I can get 2100 watts before it shuts everything for over powering. I have a 32 in element tv my ps4 and my Xbox 360 I will have in my book bag and I seen In the truck stops 12 volt fridges. Was wondering what watt power strip y’all think I should get I saw the 175w but didn’t know if that was gonna be good enough

APU:

Auxiliary Power Unit

On tractor trailers, and APU is a small diesel engine that powers a heat and air conditioning unit while charging the truck's main batteries at the same time. This allows the driver to remain comfortable in the cab and have access to electric power without running the main truck engine.

Having an APU helps save money in fuel costs and saves wear and tear on the main engine, though they tend to be expensive to install and maintain. Therefore only a very small percentage of the trucks on the road today come equipped with an APU.

APU or a 2100 watt Inverter?

OK you’re looking at about 250 W total for the TV and game system DO NOT USE A MICROWAVE at the same time as anything else

A750 W microwave will pull 1100 watts. You can’t go by what you see on the box. Those 12 V coolers are not good. They are peltier based cooling buT if its your only option 💁.

What is your budget. Game systems are sensitive and you should only use true sine wave inverters for them or you will burn capacitors in thier power supply units inside the game systems. Also get the largest inverter you can that is true sine wave. For instance i just got a 3000w industrial true sine wave inverter waiting for me at the house.

You dont need over 1500 unless you use a microwave and then its best to get 2000-2500 . I have a good deal of knowledge in this area and burning up game systems and basic electronics.

I have to disagree with you on the 12v coolers. On what authority are you making the claim they are no good? I have one and it works great. I know others that also use them and love them. I run a tv, led light strip and 750 watt microwave at the same time on a 2000 watt inverter and have zero problems.

Peltier based cooling runs current from dis similar metal plates to create one hot and one cold. The problem is it’s extremely inefficient. Its delta T is horrible. Its just not very cold. There are phase change based models ( what Refrigerators use) that are way better. They use a 12vdc compressor which is not always on and the DT is much better. They are Much more expensive though So most drivers can not afford them when they first start out or dont even know they exist. You can even make them yourself( much more difficult but well worth it if you know what you are doing).

Been water and phase cooling computers for more than 2 decades so have some knowledge in this. When i buy my next truck i might custom build a unit under bunk to augment my refrigerator capacity since i will need it for the wife. All under bunk storage stuff goes to belly boxes i just had ordered to be fabricated at Brunners in joplin ( scheduled to install on trailer in october)

I agree for the most part the 12 volt coolers are not great and have a hard time dealing with outside temperature changes. I am in a different situation than most here I guess. I am home every weekend for sure so I use a 12 volt igloo for drinks and such but for food especially frozen I bought an RTEC cooler, same as a YETI, and put a frozen gallon jug of water in there with my frozen and cold foods for the week and it keeps everything great for the week.

👍 When I do bring my truck home(living in florida i sometimes just fly home instead so i dont loose money) I freeze water bottles to do the same thing for that cooler and I pack the truck Refrigerator and the cooler to bursting and eat everything in the cooler first while the ice slowly melts.
