Hello everyone,

I am new to this website. I have went through a private CDL school to get my CDL-A license and I have taken the CDL test. I passed my pre-trip inspection and my maneuvers/skills portion the first time, but I have not passed my driving/road test portion of the exam which is the final portion. The transmission I have tested out in is a 10-speed manual transmission and that is the only transmission that the school i went to teaches in. I have taken the road portion a couple times and I'm having a tough time getting passing portion of the exam. I live in Macomb County, Michigan. I was wondering in anyone in the Metro Detroit area knows any type of special or private training to help me pass the road test using a manual ten speed transmission.

I really appreciate your help. Thank you very much!

Pre-trip Inspection:

A pre-trip inspection is a thorough inspection of the truck completed before driving for the first time each day.

Federal and state laws require that drivers inspect their vehicles. Federal and state inspectors also may inspect your vehicles. If they judge a vehicle to be unsafe, they will put it “out of service” until it is repaired.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

What kind of trouble are you having?

YouTuber named Smart Trucking has some skill tips. Lots of other YouTubers posted 10-speed shifting skills. Is it the shifting skills or road skills?

I am guessing you are stalling the truck and failing due to impeding traffic? Is it on turns or at stop lights?

I'd check to be sure your school doesn't offer special one-on-one training by one of their instructors per hour on weekends. (Mine does and I didn't hear about it till near the end and too late between tests to be able to schedule ahead for the help if I chose...Unless I fail again next week. This school charges $85 an hour.) If not available there I'd call all the other schools in the area. I'd also thought about running a Craigslist ad... If you only find an 8/9-speed option maybe that'd be not that much of a big difference, since we train on those and there's one Volvo 10-speed which I've steered clear of but it doesn't seem to be much different really. It WOULD be good to hear what exact trouble you've been having...or WERE having if that's why you only posted once. No surprise that the folks here are right, it does gradually all start to "click" into place...hopefully before "too late", is of course the trick. --E.Z.
